Not very sunny swanage

just wondered if you guys have tried turbo'ing any other cars in the past..... thought it might be interesting to here some stories of sucesses or failures.

ill start...... at the weekends we go off roading and get muddy, a few of the guys we know have built and use rangerover/landy hybrids, with 3.5/9 v8's in. these go considerably better than the suzuki sj410 we have been using to launch the boat in the summer and go off roading in in the winter, so me and my mate neil decided it (his jeep) needed a bit more poke......

cue a very firedamaged sj413 which we rippped the engine and gearbox out of, a new cam belt and cam cover (the old ones melted in the fire) a few turbo bits found in the shed (turbo off a disel taxi, carb of a renault 5gtt) a couple of adapter plates, a bit of welding and a little time in the garage, (started at 8pm tuesday night, finally got the engine mounted at about 1.30 wednesday morning after finding the engine mounts were completly different and fabricating new ones) we have a sj413T!!!!

it doesnt go too bad, but has only been on the road a few hours (and already been spun once!), and is already showing a few problems...... cooling (leaking pipe), fueling (needs a smaller main jet) drive (new clutch plate soon i think!) and timing (erm.... play with it and try and make it work okish).

Gonna spend an afternoon on it tomorrow and try and sort some of the problems out..... planning on scaring the landy boys this weekend, (they dont know weve done anything!!!!) should be a bit quicker than last week!!! means we'll still get just as stuck, just that bit quicker!!!

total cost so far......... erm...... ?10 for the oil feed pipe.... ?20 to replace the fire damaged bits and i think thats it......

if i remeber, ill post a couple of piccys this weekend, shame i cant record the sound..... its awsome!!!!!!

Pete

And on the 7th day........... God created turbochargers!

got it boosting properly for the first time today.... enough power to spin up the rear wheels (in 2wd) changing up into third on dry tarmac!!!! absolutley awsome off road...... the guys in the hybrid rr/lr had no chance, even with 3.9l v8's.

The best bit...... its still massively overfuelling, so we should be able to run a shit load more boost through itbefore we break anything!!!! Clutch is feeling the pressure alrready tho!!!
