Hi all,

Yesterday i tried in vain to start the Mini for the first time in about 3 years. It's had "old" oil in for that time and I've rotated the crank occasionally in that time. It's also had another standard turbo head on since I last fired it up but the rocker/ valve clearances seem OK

More recently it's had new oil in and a gallon or so of fresh petrol. There's petrol getting in to the carb, and as far as I can tell, in to the cylinders (whipped out a spark plug, popped a pencil in and it came out wet smelling of petrol).

The plugs look OK, and if held by a head stud will arc across OK, though I'm not quite sure how strong-a-spark is a decent spark? I'm still on points until I get round to a Megajolt type upgrade. Cleaned up the dizzy cap and rotor arm, the HT leads, etc.

All 4 cylinders have decent compression.

Turning it over sounds OK, jump leads off my Audi, though the jump leads did get quite warm (maybe not up to the job? They're quite cheap leads). Mini just wouldn't even try to fire though (yes, also checked the leads were on in the correct firing order!)

Unless anyone has some clever ideas (hence this post), I'll order the following in the week and try again next weekend;

New plugs (can they "go off"?)
New HT leads (can't hurt)
New coil (can they go "off" too?)

If still nothing, I'll go and get some heavier duty jump leads (the Mini battery is very much kapput, but I don't believe that's and issue).

Any thoughts or opinions appreciated.

Cheers,

Dave.
