All this talk of volumetric efficiency has got me thinking, basically....

Guys I'm not technical at all in most respects, when I go tescos I always browse the magazines in the car section,
Looking through the jap car mags there are evos with bhp figures in excess of 600 and skylines and supras clearing 1000bhp so I'm sure a 1293 can clear 220-240 with ease, my bird went school with Harvey gibbs's lad ( don't know if any of you lot has heard of him meant to be quite big in the cossie world) the lad had his rs turbo rr'd at 256whp that's only a 1.6 Harvey is running his latest creation under the idea it a hair line off 800bhp not sure if that's fly or wheel power but again only a 2ltr

ve was clearish when I was taught it in college but it's blown straight through and I have no idea anymore, I've totally forgotten, but turbos running big boost is like witch craft to me I've never been able to figure out how a 2ltr evo can make 600bhp, let alone a cossie making near on 800bananas

Pretty much can someone please explain how this works I'm really trying to follow these post, most of them go straight over my head, it proves dumbass's can pass vehicle repair mechanical courses. I just want a turbo engine running about 120bhp reliably but if it was to die be able to diagnose the fault and repair it

Please excuse my shite wording typing this on my phone and I'm shattered, won't be offended if you take the piss out of my stupidity or me possibly looking like a bellend I'd just like to get my head around this

Thanks for reading and any help that can be given

Best thing to do is put a book about turbocharging theory on your Christmas list.

I began with the Corky Bell book, it was prety good 10 years ago, not sure if there are any better books available now.

Don't take this as me having a go, as I'm not. But 120 bananas is easy enough to achieve these days. A T3, intercooler, appropriate fuel, timing and boost and you're off. You don't need to understand VE to achieve that. I don't and we have a 150 banana A series vehicle...

That might be different if you wanted 200 bananas as that is pushing the limits a little bit.

a standard rebuilt metro turbo motor, with a suitable intercooler and a little boost hike should see you beyond 120 imo
just look at John and apbellamy's turbo metro van its essentially stock with the right bolt ons

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

i understand 120bhp is easily achievable with a turbod a series engine but the car will be my everyday drive and just need good reliability.

although, i may have mislead with the post really, the reason i opened this page was to see if someone could help explain how to work out VE,
in college i was told with modern vehicles the standard asthmatic engine had about 85% VE and a engine running forced induction would be filling the cylinder to about 95% VE, however i was never told how you can cross reference this to bhp figures if this is any clear

sorry for giving out the wrong impression

thanks
