I need to buy a dial gauge (and stand), are there any recommendations or should I just go for a cheap ebay special?

Depends really how much you will use it, if its just for timing cams in etc, a cheap one is probably good enough- you are not bothered so much about its ultimate accuracy, you are just looking for the mid point of the dwell.

if i was buying againg id spend a tad more on the stand cos mine requires pretty strong fingers to get it secure with the poxy little knurled knobs on it.
