Sounds more like your gearbox is broken.

I reckon the yoke inside the gear selector housing is upside down. This would explain the problem.

ok thanks i thought so

so all i have to do is take out the roll pin spin the yoke around and re-attach the selector and i should be good to go

i don't need to strip the gearbox down do i as the engine hasn't been striped down since Ive had it. is it just a case of moving the Yorke around with a punch to the right place

Take out the gearstick first from inside the car, if the yoke is "pointing" to the top its 180 deg out.

So remove roll pin at g/box end, spin rod thru 180 deg and put roll pin back. Then replace gearstick.

Hopefully that will sort it.

The yoke is inside the gear change housing which is at the bottom of the gearstick. Take the gearstick out from inside the car and you will see how it works.

Have you had the selector mechanism apart recently or disconnected from the box? If so then follow the advice above. If not, then you have a gear box fault.

To remove the gear stick:

Take any gear stick gaiters of the inside of the car. At the bottom of the gear stick you will see a cup covering a ball on the base of the stick. There are two pins, one on either side of the cup. The cup is slotted. Push the cup down and rotate it so that the pins move in the slot and then disengage from the slots. The gear stick should lift out easily and you should be able to see the part Tom mentions above.

ive stripped my donor manual and put all the manual parts in my automatic cos the shell was in a much better condition.

so i had the selector box off with the gear selector out too. but i remember that i was having trouble getting the gear rod to line up to the gearbox hole so i could put the roll pin and i might of moved it so i could get a better angle at putting the roll pin in. so im thinking it might be the gearbox mount (the metal shaft with the hole in for the roll pin) because now i can select all gears apart from reverse so i know my gear stick is in correct or can you put it in another way. like i said ive got 2 holes in my selector box a small at the bottom and a bigger hole at the top and thats how ive put my gear stick back in.

I take it from your comments, you've not had the gearbox apart?

I agree. Why bother, and try learning something new..

did you have reverse before??

Does the gear stick actually move the extra travel to the right and backwards after you have lifted it to clear the blocking mechanism ???

If the stick isn't moving any further to the right from the 3-4 position, is something stopping it from lifting high enough when you pull it up ???

If it doesn't seem to lift high enough, temorarily remove the pressed steel cover plate from the bottom and try again (the blocking plate is part of that cover so with the cover off you no longer have to lift the stick to get over to the reverse gate).

yes reverse worked fine before and i can select all gears as normal.

i think ive moved the gearbox stud where the roll pin goes 180 the wrong way

ive just put my car on axle stands and started it up to see how the gears are working at the moment it goes throu 1-4 no problem they seem normal but when i put it in reverse it goes forward.

another problem ive noticed is the boost gauge is reading minus 20 psi on tick over and when im going throu the gears it peaks at 0 and then drops to 20 psi till i build up the revs and my dump valve is makin g no noise when running throu the gears too. could this be my actautor because at the moment ive mounted it half open does it need to be fully closed to gain boost

Which forward is it - you should be able to tell from the speed of the wheels - if it's 4th then the selector shaft isn't rotating enough to reach the reverse gate.

Check what I said earlier by removing the plate at the bottom which restricts the rotation without the stick being lifted.

If its not that, it's most likely one of the roll pins in wrong (protruding out) and stopping full rotation at the gearbox coupling.

The only other thing I can think of is a twisted selector shaft......
