just been doing some reading and is it true that you can use megasquirt but without the fuel injection bits and just use the ignition side?

Yep.

My Megasquirt is running Ford coilpack wasted spark ignition (no EDIS), with a 36-1 trigger wheel and 22 psi MAP sensor.

It uses a Ford VR trigger sensor and standard Rover Air & Coolant sensors to control my mappable ignition (Load/boost, RPM, Ignition Advance map), water injection pump and injector pulsing, electric fan control, knock detection and has an output for my tacho and input for my wideband O2 sensor.

All the wires for connecting fuel injection (about 3 of them I think) are simply coiled up and placed safely out of the way behind the ECU under the dash. If I wish to bin the carb and go EFi, then it is possible at a later date without having to fit a new ECU.

Got mine in 2006 from Phil Ringwood at:

http://www.extraefi.co.uk/

Phil's been building Megasquirt ECU's since 2003 and is one of the original writers of the MS Extra code.

My MS1 ECU uses a V3 board and indeed runs the 'Extra' code. Phil's website explains the many options he offers, including going to MS3 but as a basic 4 cylinder setup I'd recommend go with an MS2 ECU as you can then opt at a later date to load the Siamese Code if you wanted to. I can't do that with my MS1 ECU.

Well worth it - a very worthwhile mod which you can have hours of fun tuning the map yourself very easily on a basic laptop with the Megatune software off the net. Also, very Rolling Road friendly.

Richard.

Minivanless, but reluctantly happy living with the decision. There'll be another one day.

As Richards says.

The only point I would add is that if you start with an MS1 and ever wanted to run siamese code fuel injection later (which does need an MS2 processor), provided the PCB has been fitted with a socket for the processor (rather than the processer being soldered directly to the board) the MS2 daughterboard and processer is virtually a straight plugin upgrade.

Also, whilst Phil obviously markets a well made product, the whole Megasquirt concept is DIY and there are at least three of us on this forum who have built them ourselves. It's quite straightforward if you can solder and if you're building it just for ignition, only a few hours work.

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???
