I've been offered a GTM Rossa for £1000. It looks quite smart, needs tidying up here and there, the interior looks a bit tatty, no MOT as the rear brakes need sorting out. The engine is 1293cc and if it turns out to be knackered thats not a problem as I can build one up from some spares I have.
However I know nothing about fibre glass cars, or GTMs. Is there anything to watch out for? And does the price seem reasonable? I mean, you can buy a very rusty mini for £1000 can't you and this is a bit different...

Just make sure it's properly registered as a GTM rossa on the V5C.

Yea I was concerned I would not be able to MOT it due to inconsistencies on the V5. He says it has GTM Rossa on the V5. I will check before I buy it. Are there any other legal issues with kit cars?
I'm getting given an extra set of wheels and tyres as well, 13x8 Alleycats with 195 Dunlops which makes the deal a bit better

As long as it's registered properly then there should be no issues. Might be harder to get insurance, that's all.

As it's on a "Q" plate it most likely is correct on the V5 - they used "Q" plates long before SVA/IVA came in to register vehicles as kit cars if the sum of the original parts wasn't enough to keep the doner vehicle's registration number but, as said, check... Just ring DVLA and ask what that "Q" plate is recorded as as you're thinking of buying it. If you speak to them nicely and explain why you are asking, they should help you.

Once it's on a valid "Q" plate, irrespective of whether it is a pre or post '95 "Q", it should just require a normal MOT.

.....unless they've changed the rules yet again.....

nothing wrong with a Q plate. handy for those pesky MOT exhaust emissions (as it exempt)

No visible smoke at tick over, from what I can remember.

Kit car insurance is based on your age and the engine size, so a 1300 compared to a cobra or ultima with huge engines means they are near the bottom of the scale.

aahh yes, i do love the Q plate MOT, best thing is the MOTer didnt seem to know what or what wasnt needed to i blagged quite a few things such as no fog light, hazzards, washers etc and emissions are visual only.
