This morning I got a letter from an insurance company stating that our motorhome was in a collision with another vehicle in the Chesterfield area on the 30th July. The letter goes on to state that I should register the claim with my insurers.

WTF, I was in France in the motorhome somewhere between Bordeaux and Le Mans on the 30th July. Photographs, bills, toll receipts etc to prove it.

It seems that I now have to prove my innocence, else my premiums are going to go up

Someone trying it on, me thinks.

Is it your insurance company? Maybe give them a call first but it sounds abit like a scam to be honest. If you were indeed in France at that time then either someone is trying to get you in the shit or they are trying to get some details off of you.

It's a letter from the other drivers insurer. It's genuine enough. The phone number and web address check out - it's a well known insurer.

It could also be a case of vehicle cloning, so I may well inform the police if they persist.

How would the other insurance company know your address or details??

Don't insurance companies share vehicle ownership details?

They can't find your details from the reg number, but unless they can prove it was you ie witnesses and a description then I don't think it's an issue. Check with your insurance and the police though, just in case

All you and your vehicle's details will be on the Motor Insurance Database. It's shared between all insurance companies.

Inform your insurance stating clearly your location at the time of the alleged incident and deny all knowledge of it. State clearly that the other party is attempting to make a fraudulent claim. They must take this seriously and are duty bound to investigate. Then ring the police and give them the other persons details and ask them to investigate the attempted insurance fraud and potential cloning of your vehicle.

Where did you get the camper? Is there any chance that yours is the vehicle with the stolen/cloned identity?

We bought the vehicle from new, so no doubt as to its identity.

If you don't respond to the claim they will automatically rule against you. Their next step will be ambulance chasers, so get it sorted out ASAP.

Could be as silly as someone reading a numberplate wrongly, but unlikly.

as above, grab all your tickets fuel recipts pics ect and scan them, one copy for each insurance company and one for the old bill.

better to be safe etc...

Insurance companies specialise in fraud. They love paying out to fraudsters and hassling genuine claimants.

The DVLA etc will freely give out your personal info to pretty much anyone too, despite the Data Protection Act.

pictures have a "date created" property you need to send the photo to the insurace and they can check it as a scanned copy of a picture isnt proof is it? they could say "you took that on a different day" so they would have to see the date on the pic on a PC

ANPR records will show you leaving the country and arriving back in?

it can be something as simple as mistaken identity, IE the alleged injured party writing down the wrong reg number.

iv'e had two letter from my own insurer informing my that someone is trying to make a claim against me,

i called them back on both occasions and told them where i was on those dates, luckily i could prove it, also that i had had no collisions .or near misses etc,

i also asked them to ssupply me with as much info as thye could for my own interest, but they told me all thye would do is deny any involvment on my part and wait and see what the other party did next,

i heard nothing from both times since , and deffinatly not had any claims made against me .

put plainly you tell them you were not there and it wasn't you,
save any eviddence untill you really need to produce it,

then start charging them for your time at the usual rates,lol

As already stated contact your insurance company first and run through every thing with them then inform the police.

It should be pretty easy to prove that you & the camper were in France at the time, given that ferry tickets have your registration printed on them.

Given that it's been 3 months since the alleged accident I find it rather odd that they are only trying to claim now, isn't there a very short time frame to report an accident to the police / insurance companies?

I think that the police will have access to the ANPR data from Dover. That should be sufficient and more conclusive than anything I can produce.

I will inform my insurance company first, but I am going to have to ring the claimants insurers and try to ascertain if they have a correct description of the motorhome. If not, then it is a case of a misread number plate. If they can accurately describe my vehicle then it is a case of vehicle cloning and I will have to get the police involved.

I've informed my insurers.

I also range the claimants insurers. He claimed that the driver of "my" vehicle refused to give details at the scene of the accident, but they had a description that could have been me

When pressed, he could not provide a description of "my" vehicle which until that point had refered to it as a "car". He went off line for a couple of minutes and came back and said it was a motorhome. I could have also found that out over the net in a similar time.

So. I've now informed the police of a suspected vehicle cloning. But they will not investigate unless the insurers ask them to. I'm not particularly happy with that as someone could be driving around on my RFL and insurance.

Did you tell them you and the vehicle weren't in the country and can prove it?

It seems abit strange that they didn't even know that it was a motorhome, it all comes off abit sketchy. Was he able to give you any convincing details?

All he had was the registration and the description of a greying middle aged man of average build.

Apart from the reg that could be about 70% of motorhome drivers!

It really does sound like someone is trying to set you up, setting my over cautiousness aside.

Most people would have got a reg plate, make and model of vehicle and would have known that it was a motorhome.

The same with a physical description, you would have remembered things like clothes and colours.

Hopefully there are cameras around the site where the 'RTA' took place and they could see whether a vehicle with your reg plate was seen or whether this whole thing is entirely made up.
