That's for an external monitor.

If it has a PCMIA slot, use a serial cardbus.
If not use a USB adaptor. Although there are a pain in the arse.

Also the MJ V4 uses a modem type connector. There should be an adapter in the box to convert this to a serial connector.

I use a adaptor cable, serial to usb.
I had to make a update on my pc because the pc did not recognized the new cable.

When you start up the megajolt software it's trying to connect with com1. So double check the port you are using and adjust it when you start up the megajolt software, in tools, configuration....

Otherwise it won't work.

there is nothing wrong with a A-series that a turbo can't fix.

Sorry for the thread jack but would it not be sensible for the designers to equip megajolt with a usb port from the start rather then seriel?

My laptop does not actually have any sort of seriel compatability as everthing seems to be usb nowadays, so even with the seriel to usb cable megajolt can't communicate with my laptop. Maybe its just toshiba thats made seriel obsolete.

I had to take a desktop computer down to the rolling road with me when I got the engine set up.

It's down to costs and interface capabilities of the chips used in the megajolt.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

serial is dead since quite some time, so yes, going usb would be sensible.
if you have a PCMCIA slot get a serial card for that, never had problems with that

I just keep a crappy old laptop in the garage. has seriel ports and it's not the end of the world if it gets lost/damaged.

no, you can build in a FTDI chip that will make the same job like the regular external usb<->serial adapter, but much more stable.

Bargain. Do you think this could be made to fit inside the standard MJLJ v4 casing?

i stopped using MJLJ with V3, so i've never seen inside a V4, but its a very small chip.

The FTDI chip is small but still bigger and more expensive than the RS232 chip. Moreover, it's a bit more touchy to do this right than the RS232 and ideally you want to isolate the USB power and ground from the rest of the board which brings more cost and board real estate.

Having said that, it's not a big deal and I do have this on one of the boards I make. And it simplifies the use by requiring a simple USB cable (I use a miniB connector) instead of a few adapters like is the case here.
