Hi

Thought some of you may know a little about electrical wiring in the home.

I have a outdoor lights which has 3 feed wires.. live, neutral and earth, but it has a forth output which is marked LS, which I think is 'Live Sensor'.

I have a second outdoor light which I want to put up, would I be right it saying this could be controlled by the same sensor in the first light?

In which case can I just run a cable between the 2 connecting the LS, to live. Neutral to neutrul and earth to earth.

Thanks

Jon

What kind of light is it? i'm guessing just a halogen PIR or does it work off a switch?

and is it deffinantly LS not SL? [switch live]

whereabouts in Torbay are you?

Hi

I dont even think it is halogen, it is just a fancy outdoor light, I am connecting it in to a switch so I can turn it on or off but the light itself is activated by a sensor.

It is definately LS, which seems to be a output for another light, what i am wondering is do I connect the neutral and earth from the first light to the next also.

I am no longer in torbay, i should probably change that, although I now live in Newton Abbot so not far away.

If you are running ANY new wiring you need to be a certified electrician for the Part P regulations, or, get some one who is to certify it before powering it up.

You are fine simply changing an original light fitting or socket but any new wiring needs to be certified.

if the first light is already operated by a switch, then you can just run a cable from the first light to the second so the switch operates both.

so all you will need is to run a cable from the first light and connect the neutral, live and earth together to the new light.

you'll need some 1mm or 1.5mm 3 core flex if running outside of the house and some 6-7mm round clips if i remember correctly

OR some 1.5mm twin and earth if you are running the cables back through the wall and into the house and under floor boards etc

This is incorrect. The regulations state that you need to be 'competent' most councils take this to mean part P but this is not the case. Also it is quite legal to make small changes to the wiring in your house without having the whole thing recertified.

That's how I interpreted it... all new wiring must be in accordance with the new regs but any competent person can carry out the work.

Hi

Thats great, thanks guys.

What I really want to know is, if I run the live wire from the 'LS' instead of just from live, will the second light turn on and off with the first using the first ones sensor.

The switch inside is just for turning them off completely if not needed at all.

The sensor will allow anyone who is outside to have them activate by them moving around.

Thanks

Jon

Interesting, does this mean that I can run a new cable in for an electric shower myself, so long as it meets regs, e.g. double pole isolation pull switch with 4mm pole gap, rcd protection at consumer unit etc?

I 'think' so but you may need it testing if you come to sell house. I've just done the same at my dads place.

I'm open to be shown different tho.

Cheers, I was thinking to be honest about running it all in, and then seeing if I can find a friendly sparky who will inspect, test and sign it off as OK without reaming me out for a fortune.

Let me know about this Tom as I work with a load of certified sparks. I'm sure I could persuade one of them to pop round in exchange for a few beer tokens.

You are 100% correct Tom. Anyone can install it, as long as it complies to the regs. Because it's a bathroom, getting part P signoff would be a good idea.

Cheers John, I'll do the wall bashing first and then might well be in touch.
