Very good visit to rolling road today, got a different tester who knew a Series inside out. Didnt get charged for the retune, and the cars awsome now and putting 111bhp@5760rpm running 9psi.

I think when it ran lean i damaged it the same as AllanMcD, because i have a problem with random smoking on idle, see the pics.

Also i got some videos of the runs, does anyone have any web space that can host them?

Heres a couple of pics...

(dave - for you the print out isnt in a sea of maggots this time!!!)

He played with the timing, checked everything and the timing at every 1000rpm. At idle its 2degrees advanced, but after that the timing is perfect, im thinking worn distributor. He checked the condition of everything on my engine, there was one test that makes each cylinder missfire, i think ot analyse it, one of them was 0.5% out or something does this make sence. The machine alternated between the spark plugs. When it went to this one it clicked a bit too. The average of all 4 tests was ok though, but two of them said 0.5% out, wish i got a photo of the screen. He said it could be a simple case of the valve clearence being too tight on one of them there, ill check tomorow.

The smoking lasted about 3 minuets, went away and all was fine. 15 minuets laater while idling there was a bit of smoke again. its really strange, its definately oil though, but its not going down or anything.

let the guy drive it after tuning it up, im well impressed iwth it now it pulls in every gear. He said it pulls like a train!

Well i recomend Barry at Well Lane Turbos in Batley, he knows his stuff with A Series engines.

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

Torque looks good as well.

Result feebs. Yours wouldnt be doing that well with damage rings. id more likely say its the turbo, could be valve stems, all number of things.

what oil you running? they do get very hot on the rollers so the oil could be very thin causing it to go past the turbo seals

Forgot to say, this smoke your getting that you say is random, try letting the car idle for a few mins facing down a hill and then up a hill ( with engine/oil warm) sounds silly but mine will start to smoke a bit if left idling for a while on a slope, i know another mini that does the same and we have come to the conclusion that its the oil supply going to the rocker gear splashing forward and going down the valve guides. They dont smoke at all if facing uphill!!!! If you do try it let us know ur findings:)

I'd suspect the turbo - RR tuning can be pretty hard on them as it's running boost constantly for many seconds at a time - this doesn't usually happen on the open road.
Torque looks nice and flat - should be good to drive!

jim aint here to reply so i will*tongue*
its standard turbo engine running 9 psi and avonbar (8psi?) needle and an MBC
and that power is at the wheels(i am verry sure anyway*tongue*), tho personally i think well lane turbos rollers are a little bit optimistic.
but the torque curve defonatly feels like that when in the car*happy*

Feebleuk how is your smoking?
If it was the same as mine it would be smoking very heavy by now, if its intermitent then it is likley to be the turbo , mine still smokes a bit at tickover sometimes and a bit at low revs now and again it has just been rebored and new valve guides ( done 900 miles and no problems so far )*happy*

thanks :)

Its been running fine, havent thrashed it though i dont drive it hard, but i have done a hell of alot of miles and keep checking the oil/water and neither have gone down. Havent seen the smoke since, but expect it will be back!

I did have a scarey moment when noticing an engien knocking though, everone said it was my bottom end, and it got louder.

Last night i had to change the alternator over, and the bracket at the bottom had come off from the nut falling off and was rattling against the engine casing!! Engine sounds fine now ive sorted that!

Feebs, don't take this the wrong way mate, but I think you should spend a day on your car going around and tightning up all the bolts. It will save you a lot of headaches in the future

Smoking at idle after a hard run? Hokay, shoot me down on this one if you want, but I had the same issue - after a hard run, say for example on the motorway, then coming in to traffic, i'd get a puff of smoke or two, usually a trickle of it. It ONLY happened after a change to 10/50 semi synth oil (for testing).
This would go away after a bit of lower speed driving, but after examination of the rocker box, I was finding the occasional splat of oil out the top of the oil filler.

Checking the compression (oil the bores ect) and found no probems with the rings or pistons. Checked all the valves and stems.

The turbo has been TT rebuilt about 6 month ago.Concluded that the thinner oil was leaking past the bearings in the turbo, and causing the problem.
It might be the lower oil pressure at idle allowing the bearings to shift slightly and weep?
(try a turbo oil pump?)

Just a thought,
Ed
