It checks that the warning light (the switch itself) is still functioning. There is a float in the brake master cylinder cap. The light should come on if the cap is removed. If it does not, there is a problem with the float switch or wiring. The test switch only tets the light. Most of the time the wiring at the float or the float itself is faulty, yet the light still works when you push the switch. Totally useless as far as I can see. Nobody uses the test switch and if you did, what is it telling you?

This is not normally a question asked on this forum, but im sure it gets asked at least once a week over on TMF

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Good stuff. So do I still need the warning light?

Just had a look here:

http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual/contents.htm

and found no mention of warning lights for the braking system. So I'd say not.

Technically you do need one, modern vehicles use the handrake warning light for this. The handbrake tests the bulb every time you put the handrake on, and if it stays lit its indicating a fault, usually low fluid due to what ever reason.

Ditched that years ago. Moved the fog light switch across from that little tacked on panel on right hand side. Much neater

My mate had it wired up to his boost switch. Very discreet. *happy*

I took the spring out of mine and it now operates the interior light.

My mate once wired the switch through the starter relay circuit, so you had to hold it down while turning the key to start the car; a rather clever 'hidden' switch for security.
