So i've been on the look out for a GT17 for my turbo conversion, mainly been on ebay and was thinking of either getting one new or used and as cheap as possible with the intention to rebuild it or get it rebuilt.

So i came across this on ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...RK%3AMEWNX%3AIT

not much info in the description but i'd thought i'd chance it and give it a go and could always rebuild it if it was knackered!

So anyways it arrived the other day and i'm a bit of a novice on turbos but it actually looks to be pretty good!
the compressor wheel isn't damaged, no evidence of the compressor wheel touching the housing, no cracks anywhere and theres slight side to side play in the compressor wheel but this is normal??

So now i'm thinking am i just lucky or is there something not right about it and should i put it on or take it apart and have a further look? is there anything else i can check and what would you do?

cheers!

Bargain! I'd be tempted to rebuild it still for piece of mind however *smiley*

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

looks like one i bought. it apopears to be new used. What I mean is that its new and probibly only been on the engine for 3k maybe. Its all nice and clean, little rust and the green sticky lable was still fresh on the actuator rod.

Personally, I woulndt touch it if you suspect it is a good un and usable.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

You might be lucky. The last two GT17's I bought advertised as good condtion, were total scrap. I ended up buying new.

Side to side movement mean it is fooked ...

I am willing to give half of what you paid to help you get rid of it.

And I can share postage ...

I will be using the turbo as is. Basically suck it and see. If it is fucked, which I strongly doubt, then I will rebuild it.

As for play in the shaft. There will always be a slight amount of play in the shaft on a plain bearing turbo. The oil film takes up that play. Ball bearing turbos are a different mtter. Its difficult to describe the amount of play, but when you do find a fucked turbo you will soon know what you ar looking at when you buy another. I have a fucked, a not so fucked, and the new used, and the latter was the best of the lot, where play in the shaft is concerned.

I think these sort of turbos, the new uesed ones come from cars that were smoking only to find that when the turbo was changed, it still smoked. fucked engine, not the turbo *hehe!*

Sprock 's right,
It look in very good condition (no black oily turbine or compressor, no big play aroud compressor and comp housing)
I would use it as it is, it'll put a big smile on your face.
