Earlier in the year, I was tasked with the re fitting of one of our Centrifugal compressors back onto the machine. This compressor is one of the largest 'package' compressors that we do at 5500kg. It is a single stage compressor with a variable diffuser. These compressors are throttled on their inlet by guide vanes, at the same time the diffuser moves in conjunction with the guide vanes to keep the compressor within the boundaries of surge and choke with the varaying gas flow. This is a single speed 3300v machine, but there is a variable speed option too, so over all, a very complex piece of machinery to keep within its operating limits. Which is the reason why the compressor was shipped to Texas for a rebuild (no buying a rebiuld kit on Ebay for these *hehe!*) Normally we rebuild these in situ, but this one had already been completely removed from the machine and stripped down.

It took 5 of us an hour and a half, each having a turn, to lift the compressor from the flat bed 10m in the air, and 75m across the top of 5 other machines and another 3/4 of an hour to drop the compressor back onto its bed. For every 1m of lift, you pull 100m of chain *hehe!* with 5.5 tons on the end.

This is just a big electric supercharger *hehe!*

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

These compressors are for refrigeration. This particular one is for one of the largest package (all in one) water chillers we do. The cooling capacity of this one chiller is 6000kw and uses 1600kg of refrigerant 134a, the same stuff in your car air conditioning. Your car is likely to use around 1kg of R134a and likely only 3kw cooling capacity. Certain buildings in Canary Wharf have six of these machines! just for the air conditioning. Talk about global warming and CO2 emissions, just for a bit of comfort!!! The compressor above has a different purpose, it if used in manufacturing process of penecilin.

We do an open drive (seperate gearbox and motor) 5 impellor centrifugal compressor for industrial applications, the likes of Ineos (old ICI) and Centrica Gas Storage. These sytems use 10s of 1000s of KG of refrigerant. The motor is so big that it itself has a starter motor just to get it moving *hehe!*

There is new development on the centrifugal compressors which is very very interesting. Magnetic oil free frictionless bearings. The shaft sits in a magnetic field, touches nothing and needs no oil!!!

OT but I work for Centrica now. (company has been bought by them)

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Here you go Stevie http://www.turbocor.com/products_technology/magnetic.html

Just need to addopt the theory into turbo chargers, and perhaps use permenant magnets instead
