I am putting a modern engine back together and many of the faces are sealed with a silicon bead not a gasket. Can anybody recomend a decent product to use and where you got it from (although I am guessing that most descent A1 or Halfords will stock such stuff)

Wurth RTV is what I use, on the expensive side but from using shite such as Granville silicon the Wurth is well worth the premium in price (see what I did there!)

Any decent moto factors should have the wynns stuff. If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of. |

Is no one happy with Blue Hylomar ?. Perfectly happy with it, it's all the only one I ever use on metal to metal. But although RTV (so far as I can tell) it isn't silicone. So it will be considered "old Skool" and ignored by most :) But most modern showers and baths leak.......

Is no one happy with Blue Hylomar ?. I used it with the first engine I ever built. I took lots of care, and used new gaskets with blue hylomar on every joint. The damn thing leaked like a sieve. On the advice of my dads mate who ran an engine machine shop, I switched to Wellseal if using a gasket, Wurth RTV without. Never since had a problem.

RTV describes a type of compound, silicone rubber is a compound. I'm not sure what Loctite RTV compound is classified as, but it has no silicone in it and is safe for lambda sensors.

The loctite stuff is indeed a silicone rubber compound.

when it comes to thread sealing at work, we use nothing but Loctite 577. Sets as soon as the joint is tightened up, no need to wait for it to go off before putting the joint under pressure, and this is the important bit, it is easy to break the sel on disassembly. Some of our workers use a stuff called Permabond. That stuf does what it says, its a permenant bond!! beware on copper and brass fittings!! you will have to break the joint with high heat. Pain in the Arse. On 26th Oct, 2004 TurboDave16v said:
