I am putting a modern engine back together and many of the faces are sealed with a silicon bead not a gasket. Can anybody recomend a decent product to use and where you got it from (although I am guessing that most descent A1 or Halfords will stock such stuff)

Cheers

Wurth RTV is what I use, on the expensive side but from using shite such as Granville silicon the Wurth is well worth the premium in price (see what I did there!)

I buy mine from my factor who keep it, or I think there are ebay sellers with it.

Wellseal will also do a good job if you have some of that.

Loctite

Hlafords sell it in a couple of tube sizes.

There is three grades, I cannot remember the numbers, but its colour coded. Black is a low modulous RTV intended for constant exposure to oil and coolant. Grey is a high modulous RTV intended for constant exposure to coolant and infrequent exposure to oil. Copper is a low modulous high temperature RTV for use in areas exposed to 200 degrees.

Loctite brand is a brand you can trust that it does what it says it does. While Wellseal is good, its damn messy and not so good at large gap filling, that the BMW16v guys have to deal with on the head covers.

Perfectly happy with it, it's all the only one I ever use on metal to metal.

But although RTV (so far as I can tell) it isn't silicone.

So it will be considered "old Skool" and ignored by most :)

But most modern showers and baths leak....... *happy*

I used it with the first engine I ever built. I took lots of care, and used new gaskets with blue hylomar on every joint. The damn thing leaked like a sieve. On the advice of my dads mate who ran an engine machine shop, I switched to Wellseal if using a gasket, Wurth RTV without. Never since had a problem.

I've not had much success with Hylomar either,

I've used Loctite 574 a lot (as its always hanging around at work) and its pretty good,

used welseal and it was good, got it everywhere though and couldnt get it off my hands lol

not used silicon stuff really so can t comment.

RTV describes a type of compound, silicone rubber is a compound. I'm not sure what Loctite RTV compound is classified as, but it has no silicone in it and is safe for lambda sensors.

RTV - Room Vulcanising Rubber. Two types. The stuff that smells like vinegar and the 'odorless' that although has an odor, it is fairly neutral. Both use the moisture available in the air as a catalyst to cure.

Anyone using the term 'silicone' meaning a 'sealer', is reffering to RTV compounds, particularly silicone rubber, but the term silicon in itself has become synonymous with sealants much like Hoover is with vacuum cleaners. RTV would be the better terminology where this type of sealant is concerened *wink*

Ok, not used RTV either *tongue*

also, not sure what that 574 stuff is but its not like other sealers that I've seen, it sets more like a glue.

when it comes to thread sealing at work, we use nothing but Loctite 577. Sets as soon as the joint is tightened up, no need to wait for it to go off before putting the joint under pressure, and this is the important bit, it is easy to break the sel on disassembly. Some of our workers use a stuff called Permabond. That stuf does what it says, its a permenant bond!! beware on copper and brass fittings!! you will have to break the joint with high heat. Pain in the Arse.
