I lost my HTC Magic last week, so am looking for a new one soon.

Trackmaster is a brilliant app!
Lap times are very accurate, and for post race analysis it's as good as most expensive data loggers.

I do like the Desire indeed and it's a great phone.
Never used the Touch HD and this is the first time I've used a decent phone for any extended period of time but I am impressed!
Very fast and usable. Only issue in my eyes is the battery life is a little short but it is getting very heavy use at the moment.

Ive an HTC Hero and I hate the fucking thing.

Woefully inaccurate keyboard, and you cant even use a stylus !!
Seems slow too.

And as for Orange/3G, I'm doubftul 3G actually exists !!
Total nightmare to get an internet connection, and when I do, its usually slow as fuck.

So can anyone highlight the good points ?

The hero is quite early as far as android based handsets go and yes, it has a few flaws.

You can use a stylus by the way but it has to be one designed for a capacitive screen rather than resistive - they can be bought on eBay for peanuts.

The issues with orange and Internet speed are not handset related - you'd get that with any phone, it's just the orange network is a bit naff for Internet. Tmobile are about the quickest believe it or not if you can get signal.

Androids main selling point is that it is open source therefore practically anyone can make apps for it - we've got guys at work pissing about making android apps in their spare time just for fun.

As for matts question earlier about the advantages of a desire over your current HTC handset - well the biggest one is that it doesn't run the god awful Windows Mobile platform, it runs android.

Now, I'm an unashamed apple fan boy, and I admit it all day long. The iPhone is where it's at phone wise. The problem with android is and always will be that it is designed to run on multiple hardware platforms (sharing that in common with windows on pc's) and as such will never reach it's full potential and will often be buggy or will run slow. The iPhone has specific hardware designed to work with the iOS which was built on Mac OSX - both these platforms are designed only to run on certain hardware which means they can be much better optimised and quality controlled. That's not to say they don't suffer their own problems - all hardware/software goes wrong, it just happens less often.

That being said, if I couldn't have iPhone or it didn't exist, I'd be all over android simply because with the exception of blackberry OS, all other phone OS's are stuck in the 90's. For me, nokia should give up now to save face as they haven't produced a decent handset since the n97, and Sony ericsson - well, they should have given up a LONG time ago!!!

That's my tuppence worth anyway and is based on the fact that i have to provide technical support on all these things on a daily basis so I see the best and the worst of it all!

Now it's my turn to say WTF are you lot on about !!!!

I hate phones. I never ring anyone unless it is a matter of life or death and don't answer unless I know who's calling.

The thing is we are not talking about phones. We are talking about a thingamebob that one of its functions happens to be a phone.

I don't want to get into the whole apple / everybody else debate, but although their hardware/software is very good thay are commercially a load of manipulating, tie into everything of their own, rip off merchants of the worst kind. If you think microsoft were bad putting IE on your pc then apple have taken this the another level. Maybe that is just me?

Orange have just merged with t mobile so now my phone uses whichever service is best in that area reception wise, no idea if they will share internet stuff though but it may get better...

Correct, they have, but only for voice and text, not for internet as yet.
