Did a rebuild on my gearbox today.

replaced the third motion shaft (late type with the 18mm bearing), with an identical shaft ( also the 18 mm).

Now the strangest thing is, that the mainshaft nut doesn/t fit???

identical shafts thread is not damaged... if i measure threadside old shaft, it is about 17,9 mm, the new one is nearly 19 ????

the shaft you had is an ...... A series,
you need a mainshaft nut for the .... A+
and thats it

There was a short period of time (79-81 according to Minispares catalogue) just before the changeover from A to Aplus when the 18mm nose was used on early (A) geartrains. So measuring the small bearing end does not tell you A or Aplus.

Perhaps the change to a metric nut was not made until the end of this 2 years ???

From your description "just found out that the nut from the 1st motion shaft fits the thread of the third motion shaft", then this one.

http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?ty=pb&pid=33873

The earlier shafts have the smaller thread, later shafts the larger one.

But the change was definately NOT at the same time as the 18mm nose bearing. I have just measured two shafts from my large box of spare parts, both with 18mm nose bearings, one with the small threaded nut and one with the large threaded nut...... (which is what you must have as well).

I can also confirm that there are 18mm shafts with both sizes.

Mine gets in the way a bit, but only when it is up. If it is down it does not cause a problem.
