I have a 1992 Spi cooper and i am totally fed up with the lame injection system. I plan to change it to a single HIF44 carb soon, BUT...

I started to wonder if i could fit a turbo to it. I don't want very much power, it would just be a 'tarts-turbo' really - only want it for the noice. *wink*

Is it feasable to do this low-power conversion on the standard lump? Obviously the comp ratio would have to be lowered, but could i do this with a spacer plate, or would i have to modify the head?

I've been reading about the mirage kit, and this would be the way that i would like to go. What other stuff would i need to fit this to my car?

metty turbo dizzy?
carb?
different exhaust?

Sorry if these questions are obvious, but i have had a good read of the site and can't find answers to all the questions.

I would think change the head or have yours reworked to about 28/30 cc to start with

its more than possible, but its a lot of money just for the noise, you must want some sort of power increase, the noise is but a by prouct of the power*wink*

lol, i know, but you have to agree, mini turbo's are the coolest thing on earth!! I'm not that bothered about power as my other car is pretty quick... just not very cool! *wink*

So a metty turbo head is probably a good start then. Will my pistons (non-dished iirc) be ok if i keep the boost low?

Not very sunny swanage

not if you use the mirage kit like you suggested...... just abolt on job.... quick thought, has the spi block got the required holes? ie dizzy hole (i know some engines didnt have this) and oil return/fuel pump hole?

And on the 7th day........... God created turbochargers!

SPI will have all the right holes in it. it's the mpi that didnt have a dizzy hole and the oil filter mounted straight onto the block.

First mini turbo to get in the 12's & site perv

Herefordshire

dont bother with a turbo head, theyre all pretty much the same, just get a regular one reworked.

i thought the spi didnt have a fuel puump hole? that would make the oil drain very difficult

hmmmm, yeah forgot about the lack of fuel pump....i doubt rover will have re-worked the block though just to block off one hole, there's probably just a blanking plate bolted on instead.
