Just a general question for you clever people.

What the view on EGR valves? are they better replaced with a blanking plate?

I ave a 330d Touring that I'm planning to run until its done... and was thinking about replacing the EGR to stop the crap building up?

any views?

I run a supercharger and I don't care the TB is on the wrong side.

definately blank it off, if you can .. later ecu's throw a wobbly if they dont detect a mass airflow change when the EGR is activated. there a waste of space used only to reduce NOX emissions.

while your in there, remove the inlet manifold and remove all the secondary throttle/tumble valve/whatever there called's when they break(and they will) they get swallowed by the engine and make a terrific mess. even the later "uprated" ones fail.

and clean out the breather system/replace filter if fitted :) this will save your turbo dieing prematurely.

Thanks Denis, That was my thinking, from reading some posts, but its good to get another view.
Its an older model so it doesn't have the manifold flappy things... and I dont think the detection was available until 04 so it shouldn't know its been blanked off.

I think I will replace the Breather system, and EGR valve at the next opportunity.

My 2002 320d started playing up the other week. the ERG valve was blocked up. Right pain, i've been told if i replace mine with the blanked off version it will though up a ECU fault and a warning light (seems odd to get a warning light.. but thats what the BMW forum said)

alex , i would try blanking it and see how you fare, you may get lucky as im sure the emissions requirements for mas-air-flow > EGR feedback kicking up a fault code came about circa 2004.

EDIT the egr valve has its own electronic feedback circuit to monitor position which will throw a code if jammed shut or disconnected. the trick is to leave everything intact and working (you'll need to clean the egr) but somewhere between the exhaust and inlet, just block the flow of gasses :)

Then I think you're OK. I just removed the vacuum hose from the EGR, and I'm planning to get this:

If your car was a 2002 I think the engine managment light might go on, and the car go into limp mode.

I removed the inlet for changing the glow plugs, and the inlet was just FULL of junk. If never have removed the inlet I'd check the little flaps that are in there as well. You don't want those to jam and fall off.

V that was the same bit of kit that I was thinking of buying. It cant be good getting all that gunk into the inlet.

Will be done at the next service I think.
