I sold a car in September to the wife’s brother who insured it and used it. A couple of days ago we got a letter from our insurance company with a thank you for automatically renewing our policy. I am sure I cancelled it in September but have no proof.

Is possible for 2 people to have separate policies on a car – obviously possible but legal or allowed?

It's illegal to have 2 policy's on one car. However the insurance company should be able to see there is another policy outstanding on it.

I'm sure you get a cooling off period when you take out/renew your insurance policy. Might be worth checking the old paperwork.

You need to chase yours but get the details of the other persons policy to give to yours.

I presume the insurance company can get in trouble for re-insuring as the information is readily available and they are meant to check to prevent fraud, etc.

Make it clear you rung up and cancelled the policy and it is their fault it has carried on.

This is correct. More than one person can have their own insurance on the same car, therefore two or more policies. But one person can't have two policies on the same car.
