my photo card expired on my licence at the beginning of the week. I went in last week to the post office to sort it all out but given me leaving it a bit late, haven't got the new one through yet. Anyone know what the legalities are if it hasn't been updated on the system yet??

last thing i want is to find out i'm technically driving without a valid licence........

If it has expired and you don't take steps to replace/rectify it then you face up to a £1000 fine, the same as if you change your address but not update your licence.

Saying that, someone I know hasn't updated their licence with a new picture and it's now 2 years overdue.

Its only the photocard that has expired. The paper licence is THE licence. The photocard is only an extract from THE licence, and on its own, is not a licence.

You should be fine.

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I thought one was only valid with the other? Anyhow, they took both parts back so I don't actually have a licence to produce at the moment

As far as I'm aware, with a photocard and paper counterpart you need both parts where as with an old paper licence that is the licence.

Straight from the horses mouth:

Driving before your licence is returned

You can drive before you get your licence as long as you:

* have held a Great Britain or Northern Ireland licence issued since 1 January 1976 or another exchangeable licence
* are not disqualified from driving
* haven't been refused a licence for medical reasons or for failing to comply with medical enquiries
* wouldn't be refused a licence for medical reasons - if in doubt, check with your doctor
* keep to any special conditions that apply to your licence

Probably worth reading this too:

Not very sunny swanage

I was about three months late doing mine, never had any problems. Would have been a bit more worried if i'd actually thought about it probably. I just kinda figured it's only the photo that has actually expired, I mean I drove fine before i had a photocard license, how can an expired photo have any importance??

I realise the law is the law etc, but seriously?!?! Nice way for them to make a few quid though, eh?

And on the 7th day........... God created turbochargers!

sure is - £24.50 at the post office to renew something I already had. Just hoping the points have rubbed off on the new paper section!
