Just take your time. Prep is everything, but if you don't lay it down right, you'll be sanding and repainting from now until your first borns wedding, lol.

I painted my mini myself and it came out perfect, I practiced on a punto first and painting little bits like my fuel tank. ive since painted my bmw and a nova i restored, its very easy if you get the best equipment you can afford. I bought a devilbiss GTI spray gun, and the biggest compressor i could get, and like miniswordsman says take your time.

2k i found was easier to paint with, i painted the mini and bmw in waterbased because i wanted a pearl metalic.

This link was invaluble for me and i definately recommend it:
http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/spray-painting.htm

even though its painted in a shed, i found it really easy. Total cost of painting the BMW about £100 materials and paint including loads of laquer

Total cost of painting mini was about £150 - £200, because the paint was £55 a litre *surprised* but still i definately recommend having a go

The prep is the main thing really, and that takes alot of time,
on car i done a while ago i flatted the whole car in 240, then 400, the a high build primer, then flatted that done with 600 and scotch in places, final finish came out like glass, was extremely flat, but i spent the best part of 4 days doing it, wasnt in a big rush.
plus a week of welding and filling before, nothing worse than fillering over a little bit of rust , as next year it'l be back......

I bet my first wank came quicker than your first mini turbo

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

I just gave it ago too, I saved up to pay someone to do it and bought the paint but then ended up out of work so had loads of time and no money. I am glad I had a go but you can tell it's not right but next time it will be better. I did really enjoy it though.

If it where me, I would just get a big can of paint and a firework. Can on the roof, lit firework in the can, then just run for your life. easy.

I think I will have a go at painting my cars myself too. How do you go about choosing the compressor, gun etc? Must be loads to choose from

You'll need at least a 50lt compressor, the higher the cfm the better. Anything smaller just won't flow the volume of air required. As for the gun, the best you can afford, really. I prefer a gravity setup, however others are avaliable. It's best to get a couple of different sized cups/needles also, a 1.2mm - 1.4mm is best for most modern paints. Don't forget a moisture trap for the airline too.
Cellulose is best to start with, as you'll find it easier to work with and spray - modern micas and pearls are much more expensive, and more work to get right/blend should things go wrong.
Of course be aware that all metallic 2k paints need lacquer; as such air-fed respirators are highly recommended, in fact isocyanate lacquer isn't nice stuff and the vapours produced when drying are nasty - in a confined space this is very bad for your health! The down side is that you need a bigger compressor to feed both the gun and the mask.

As others have said, the process of spraying the paint is 5% of the work - preparation is everything!! (hours and hours of it!)
Good results are obtainable at home though - the more time spent preparing before, the better the finish will be!!
This weather isn't the most condusive to painting or refinishing, mind...!
