haynes manuel is very good , it all makes sense when you get it stripped.

Everyone knows that instructions only have to be read if the thing doesn't work....

A far easier job than many believe. I rebuilt my first gearbox last year and it's not to difficult at all. As Mark said get a Haynes and once you start to remove a few bits you'll get the idea.

Common guys they are easy if ure technique is good.

Put to outter piece flat on the worktop, loosly put the inner part in and roughly push in the springs and bearings enough to stop it falling in.

Then apply slight pressure to the inner part and while its under pressure you can push the 3 bearings in one at a time wiht ure finger.

With enough pressure they dont spring out.

exocet ball bearings seem to be a common practice in gearbox rebuilding!!!!!! *blush*
have plenty of spares with you as the 3rd and 4th syncro has a habit of shedding its loads like a 13 year old looking at his first topless photo.

but it is easy once you have done your first box.

make sure you have a gurten pair of circlip pliers for the first motion shaft bearing circlip
29 mm socket for the 1st motion nut ( or is 28mm cant remeber).
plus a 38mm socket for the main shaft nut ( the ball joint socket is ideal for this).

plus check before you put the diff in that all the bell crank levers line up when both syncro's are in neutral plus reverse and the selector moves cleanly through each , if not then proberly 3rd and 4th is the wrong way round.

hope this helps.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

First motion shaft is either 1 1/4" or 1 1/8", (can't remember which)
main shaft nut is 1 1/2"

NEITHER OF THEM ARE METRIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Piston ring compressor tool works wonders :)

Has anyone got that C-shaped tool to remove the double ball bearing?? I'm thinking of making one...

I do, but I'd like the proper tool. Much better for the gearbox casing. I've seen spun bearings here because of reckless rebuilds.
