Finally replaced my thermostat and watched my temp gauge rise above the bottom line for the first time in a good few months! What a fricking bonus.
Bit touch and go with a leaky gasket though.

The only real point to this thread is to ask a really stupid, nooby question that I can't be asked to search for...
Which way do you pull the heater knob to get it to be hot?
I always thought you pulled it out for hot, pushed it in for cold but it just stayed cold in whichever way I had it.

I have the type of valve that comes straight off the block by the way, not the inline type (if that makes a difference), and it's about a month old.

Cheers.

well the one i had on mine was a pull out for hot and push in for cold.. means you could have another issue there though.. have you replaced the heater valve? that might be knackered

i got nothing but time..

Yeah replaced it about a month ago as the old one was seized. Maybe I just didn't leave it long enough to heat up, I will test it on the way to work tomorrow with my knob pulled out.

how long did you leave it brad? as it shouldnt take that long to warm up or get some heat out of the heater to know its working... if thats not working then.. well could be a knackered matrix but you would know if thats gone as it bloddy stinks, smells like someones thrown an old curry in your heater.. yeah leave your knob out mate and see what happens *wink* ha. btw ill be stripping my engine soon so if you wanna come over and have a butchers your more than welcome

i got nothing but time..

Yeah, pretty sure my matrix is pretty sound, left it for a length of time I thought would be sufficient. Oh well, we'll see.

Definitely man!
I should start stripping mine to be fair, got an engine stand on the way soon though :) but need to rebuild my 998 to stick in the daily then build the 1293 turbo.
Thinking of building myself a cheaper hobby aswell! lol

Have you got an air lock in the hoses that go to the heater matrix?

Run the engine up to temp and check the hoses to the heater matrix are getting warm.

i would say an airlock too, or a faulty valve.

I bet my first wank came quicker than your first mini turbo

These new modern turbos with their quick spool up time, would make the competition harder.

Must be an airlock as I had my heater on for the whole way to work (all 3 hours and 20 miles of it) and it was never hot.
How would I get rid of an airlock?

Also, my engine barely got hot the whole time, even sitting in standstill traffic for ages. It got up to normal working temperature briefly after a couple of hours but sits on the blue most of the time.

Those were my thoughts, I mean it could have stuck open but that's two thermostats this thing has bummed as the last one seemed to be stuck open.
Fork knows to be honest, this engine is going to be swapped out sometime anyway, can deal with it then.

you could let the engine idle and leave the top off the rad and just squeeze the hoses to pump the air round.. could also sound like a suspect thermostat tho, when there knackered they say the engines cold, then when you sit momentarily the need goes up then as soon as you move off it goes down to cold.. had it on my a3.. stupid choke stayed on aswell so cost be a bomb on petrol until it was resolved..
