I need to verify the speed of a shaft for VSS signal testing.

Anyone used one of these:

Seems too cheap to be any good.

Any other suggestions.

I've tried one of those (or similar) before at work, they rely on a bit of reflective tape you stick on a shaft.

I did not find it very good. Get a contact one (cone for shaft end, or wheel to run on surface) if you can.

I agree with Tom, we use the contact type at work with accurate results.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Thanks Joe, that may just do the trick.

There's another on ebay with a 99p start, so I'll try and get that. thaks for the offer though.

So how do you calibrate the calibration instrument???????

We use them on productions lines with encoders, so you always have something else to measure them against. *wink*

Just realised that I can measure the frequency of the input signal with my DVM to verify the RPM :$.

I was using my lathe to spin a crown wheel but it has now gone "pop" and expelled a cloud of smoke. So I have to take that to bits and identify the problem before any more testing.

Never mind, but thanks for your suggestions.
