i blocked the ecu pipe but my car has still been overboosting blowing the poppet valve off,
yesterday i tried fitting my new bleed valve, i snipped the pipe going from the compresser housing to the actuator and oil dribbled out, is this bad news ?

you got a boost gauge? could be a weak poppet valve?

oil doesnt sound too good, check the pipe between the carb and the turbo for oil signs.

Unless its got a different actuator on there with everything blocked off it shouldn't overboost.

it suggests there is a split actuator pipe somewhere or a bad/leaky connection.

there was a bad kink in the pipe maybe this was at fault ?
no boost gauge at present, when i fit the valve i'll use my gunsons gauge to set the boost until i get a proper one.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

the gauge is a MUST
it tells the story in full of the boost you are running

the more gauges you have the better

oil pressure
oil temp
boost pressure
water temp.................etc.........etc

yes I agree with benross.

I have got some pressure gauges off machinery to set boost up properly, OK they don't measure vacuum but the advantage is that I have had them calibrated.

i only recently fitted the engine, i blocked the ecu pipe up to control boost, but the scary thing is it wasnt blocked up when i bought the motor plus no signs of a bleed valve, i think the only thing that kept the motor alive is the poppet valve blowwing off every time the boost reaches 8-10psi, as you can imagine with no boost control once you hit 3000rpm the poppet blows off , it renders the motor pretty undrivable, whats even more weird, the turbo seems mint , 0 play in the turbine and no smoke when running.
i do get a big blue puff on start up though !

steve sort this problem asap

gauge and then plumb a bleed valve in

it would make a better drive for you

the only thing stopping the engine grenading is the overload valve and it needs to be the actuator

so if its been running with it open all the time it may well have weakened the spring and be blowing off early.
gauge is the way to go. possibly a gunson lo-gauge would do you for now, means you can check the fuel pressure with it as well then.
More likely to be correct compared to a cheap boost gauge.

in the inlet mate to get the actual boost supplied to the engine.

to give you a good idea and to read boost only (not vacuum as you would also get at the manifold) then plumb it into the plenum, or between the plenum and the fuel regulator

cheers iain,
i think your right in what you said earlier the poppet valve might be worn it blows off really early i dont think the turbo has time to spin properly i will try and block this up, im gonna use my gunsons for the boost gauge just for know until i've got some cash to buy one of those stealth boost gauges smart as chuff !

the popet valve you talked about Stev, some of the guys pack this with i think? 5pences to give this a higher pre load, say around 4ish

but i just run a 3/8" BSP tap down as the hole is the right size to start with "NO drilling"

and fit a taperd blank hex plug with some PTFE tape on

job done!

I just used a nut to pack it out,get one a suitable size and sit the spring on it.

Rather than use 5p's I instead drilled and tapped an M6 hole in the housing and have installed a small bolt to allow me to adjust the preload on the spring without dismantling the engine.
