Currently my garage doesn't have any kind of lighting what so ever and im looking to sort this asap!

Ive been looking at flourescent strip lights, but then stumbled accross some of this type, and thought for the price they could be better? I was thinking of mounting them on the wall maybe 3 or 4 each side of the garage?

http://www.screwfix.com/prods/46377/Lighti...Light-240V-400W

Im planning on spraying my mk1 in the garage in the next couple of months, would this type of lighting give off enough heat to help warm the garage up?

Cheers
Matt

I used to light my (small) garage with four Halogen lamps, one in each corner.
I've got to say that I find the light given off from the two 6' flourescent tubes i have now is far better at lighting the whole area than my old lights ever were, to be honest - they're only 58w each or something so burn next to nowt too, whereas 4 of these will burn loads more juice!
As for heat, the halogens do give off a fair bit, but if you're spraying in cold weather i doubt very much that they'd be enough on their own, i wouldn't be happy myself.
However, that's just the excuse you needed to treat yourself to a couple of red rads too.... :)

They aren't a very nice light to paint with Matt, the florrys will be better if a little more costly.

florescent lighting dosent have to be costly matty.

when i did mine i just picked up up a cheap extension cord and wired it to the light think it cost me about £25 all in for the lights and all

if you paint the inside of your garage white it will help alot with the lighting!

My dad has one of those lights you linked to Matty and while they're good to provide extra lighting when working in an attic or when you've got the power off to wire in new lights etc. I wouldn't want to use them as the main power source.
They get hot, touch them and it will burn your finger, but they don't conduct the heat well.

just get some big striplights and as has been said paint the walls white if you've not already done so, it makes a big difference.

Here for the craic..

Ive heard of those lights igniting paint fumes.

I seriously doubt it!

They do indeed get very very hot, halogen lamps don't last all that long and consume a lot of electricity too. 4 x 400w lights will need a fairly decent supply - 5amps plus your air compressor - youll be close to the extension leads limit. How far is the garage from your house?

Do it right and do it once. Go and get some fluorescents.

the halogen lights will ignite fumes - been on the receiving end of it that resulted in a car getting scorched! they will also cost a fortune to run and seem to go through bulbs at an alarming rate.

I'd go for tube fittings but would fully recommend if you have not done so already to paint the walls and soffit of the garage to aid reflection - it makes a huge difference

The first tubes I got were liberated from a building site (with permission) from a building that was being levelled so you don't have to buy new!

Yep, florescent fittings are cheap enough. I have 4 twin 5ft one in my garage, plus a single 6ft one over the work bench. Work a treat. Oh and they cam fromWickes as that was the cheapest I could find.

I equipped my workshop from light fittings and tubes that were being chucked out at work - I have 6 x 6ft doubles and 2 x 6ft singles and its like daylight in there. - you have seen it Matt..

Thanks for the replies lads, I won't be using halogen if there is chance of ignition then!

I was concerned that the flourescent tubes wouldn't give off good enough light. If thats what everyone else is using I'll give them a go.

The walls are already painted white. I was suprised how much difference that made to be honest.

Don't forget that strip lights have a warm up period, like energy efficient lights. So don't be disappointed if they seem dull when you first turn them on. I know I was......

Lots of flourescent tubes, job done.
And economical too.
I found halogens to be either blinding me, burning me, getting in the way or setting fire to paint vapour.
