Hi all

Started work on the engine and turbo today and already got into a problem.

I have got 3 of the bolts undone from the turbo to the exhaust manifold and one of them snapped. Going to look at heating the last bugger up before trying to get it off. Questions:

What size are the nuts? I have been using a 17mm spanner but the open end seems a bit lose. Any ideas?

Where can I get a new stud from? The ones fitted have a small hole through them with wire to stop them coming undone (fat chance of that!).

Will look at getting a rebuild kit so can anyone recommend?

The manifold looks like someone has taken a hammer to it. Is this standard looking?

Finally, whats the best way to clean everything up?

Thanks a lot everybody *smiley*

Well I have been able to progress some more but ended up snapping 2 more bolts:

Just to confirm to some people, the nuts are 17mm and are a nightmare to undo when it’s an old turbo. Anyone know where I can get a new stud from and maybe some new bolts for the exhaust manifold?

Here are the broken studs:

I have been on ebay and there seems to be a number of kits available. Has anyone used any of these?

Here is what I mean about the manifold:

Does this look normal?

I am planning on sand blasting the external parts to clean them up. I assume that there is no point putting any paint or lacquer on the parts as they will burn off too quickly.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

in short! whire wheel to clean things in a drill,

the stud size is M10 metric ten thread, and the nuts are the same.

apply alot of heat till prefer cherry red on the manifold and stud use some stiltsons and you may be lucky ?

you are best to have your turbo built with a company who does this all day as it will need to be ballanced,

hope this helps
