I'm Dennis from Paisley (outside Glasgow)

I have a fairly modded 2000 mpi Cooper (1:1.5 MED rockers, 52mm TB, KAD brakes, various ICE and some other wee bits here and there)

As you'll know mpi's can only really be tuned so much and I'm really after more power, but fed up putting money into the car for not much return.

I'd been considering a host of options - 8v bmw head, 16v bmw head, supercharged a series, carb a series, but now convinced myself that a turbo A series is the way I want to go!

I'm currently saving for an entire new engine/gearbox/turbo and hoping to have someone do the swap for me. I know hardly anything about engines and the technical side of things, so finding a company who would do the lot for me would suit me nicely... do any of you know of such a place? Spoken with Minispeed who said they could do it all. Ideally I would prefer an MED FIS engine and box, with a Mirage kit, but MED won't fit the unit. I'll need to call mirage and ask if they'd fit it all...

Anyway, I'm waffling, sorry about that. I'm looking forwrad to spending more time on here reading all the info and joining in what looks like a good laugh of a forum.

Cheers,

Dennis

Hello and welcome. you may have emmison problems at MOT time putting a turboed engine in a car that way with out some form of engine management.

Hello to you too.

Yeah, I was going to try to get it an injection engine with management to try to keep the emissions as low as possible. Do you think it will be possible or am I wasting my time?

Welcome to TM.

I'd be tempted to go with an injected 8v/16v K-head or even and injected 7-port motor. This way you can keep it legal.

SC would probably do the entire conversion for you for a price.

Or if you wanted to you could go 7-port injected and turbo (using a mirage manifold)

Depends how deep your pockets are.

So you think adding a turbo would make it illegal? Bugger. I was hoping the addition of a turbo could be done in a way to pass emissions tests.

I will consider anything that'll give me about 140bhp on, but be reliable and easy to use for daily commute, but also be a right wee bastard when it wants to, like club runs etc. *surprised*

I've been saving for ages for al sorts of work, plus I want to keep this car as long as I can, so I'm willing to spend thousands to get it the way I want it. Got a bit of work to do on front panels (nothing major), going to change the back inside and also upgrade a few mechanicals, so having to pay for that I supposed I'd be prepared to spend 6k-7k on engine and box etc, maybe more depending on how the other stuff goes. You might think I'm being mad, but I'd rather have a good company do it right, me not fook anything up and have my dream car at the end of it all.

No no no a turbo wouldn't make it illegal. However a carbed 5-port turbo would never meet the necessary emissions requirements that a 2000 mini would require. You would have to keep some form of injection to keep the emissions in check. There are ways around it such as fitting older engines which didn't need to meet such requirements, but this could be a pain the backside come MOT time.

An N/A 1380 16-v k1100 would probably net you over 120bhp which is more than enough for a quick mini.

Phew - cool - thanks - it would definitely be and injection engine I'd go for. Been looking ath those Sc engines for months now, and they're just lovely! I think a call to SC will happen tomorrow and maybe we can get a rough plan in mind about how to move on. Thanks John! Great help and info.

Close to Barshaw Park, on the Arkleston side, although enjoy a wee drive into Glasgow on a nice night when I'm bored and needing a rest from wife-based nonsense. I like to dodge potholes up there too. Maybe you've seen my wee bro Scott around, he has a slightly more noticeable green tartan Mini! Paisley also.

Do you travel through Paisley for work or something?

Nice to meet you, and thanks for the welcome. *smiley*

I've seen your brothers car about. I don't regularly travel through Paisley but normally there every few days or so

would be good to meet up with some of the more local turbo fraternity

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

a warm welcome dennis and YES! .................but now convinced myself that a turbo A series is the way I want to go!

john the emissions is not a problem on a 5 port engine for the MOT because all you do is pull the vac pipe off from the carb and it goes lean on tick over .....job done! *Yes* *wink*

I know a good MOT man, just one that sticks by the rules religiously - maybe not too bad from a safety point of view, maybe not so good from my plans point of view.
