Im sure everyone on here are sensible enough to wear googles and safety equipment when working in the garage, but for those who pass on the safety after today i cant express enough how important it is.

I was cleaning a sensor with compressed air in the clean room at work when i felt a sharp sting in my eye. on further inspection i found i had a metal splinter embedded in my iris. felt uncomfortable and scratchy but not the end of the world.
Went to the eye hospital to have it removed and thats where the flash backs to the SAW movies began. the doctor started by propping my eye open, then poking around with a needle. it took everything i could manage not to run out the door. eventually the splinter was removed leaving a rust hole in my eye "FUCK" was my first thought. im thinking ok maybe he'll give me antibiotics and it will go. NO !!!! reaching over he pulls out a mini grinder not dissimilar to something you'd port a head with, i thought he was joking, but no. imagine the dentists drill but wizzing towards your eye.

seriously i never want to go through that again, accidents happen , but please wear googles when nesscerary.

I've been to hospital with crap in my eye. not fun. I was wearing goggles, knocked some crap out of my hair when I took them off...

At least no lasting damage was done to your eye!

On the other hand....
Whilst lying under my car grinding and welding the underside of my boot floor I was wearing all the gear. Eye protection, ear defenders, dust mask. So basically I couldn't see, smell or hear the foot high flames that were raging up above inside the boot lol.
That got my attention

Warwick.

not always full proof though unfortunatly. At work there was 3 of us working around this car, 2 doing seam welding and myself doing grinding work. somehow, between the three of us my boss managed to get some shite in his eye, apparently bounced across the surface of one eye then bedded itself in the other eye.
And that was on new years eve, he spent hours in A&E with all the pissed up folk at 3am to be told they couldnt do anything and was refered to another hospital the next day...so was stuck with this metal in his eye for the time.

David.

been there too - the doc was able to tell me what colour of car I had been grinding!

I now wear protective glasses, not disimilar to oakleys - they are comfy so no issues keeping them on and they wrap around so give reasonable protection as well. got them from Arco for around £8

The problem with goggles etc is that they steam up on me. does anybody else have this problem? Found any way round it?

that is the problem I used to have at times as well.

The safetly glasses don't give perfect protection but because I can happily keep them on all day, I'm less tempted to do things without goggles, sheild etc.

I've done a bit of diving, rubbing spit over the lense then a quick rinse stops them steaming up.

My goggles had a little vent you could pull out to let them breat a bit. Like a little clear grommet. I've had shit drop in my eyes from working on the car, not from grinding, but crud under the arches falling. I don't like the not being able to see or hear properly thing though.
