Can anyone help with a description on what the difference is between hard anodizing and normal anodizing??

IIRC hard anodising is the same except they use a higher voltage to get a thicker coating, up to about 50v for normal annodising and auto a couple of hiundred volts for hard annodising,

So it's just a case of a coating? so the only reason for hard anodising is to make it harder to scratch?? is that right?

thats my understanding yes,

also IIRC normal anodising is upto about half a thou thick max and hard anodising can be up to nearly 5 thou.

Other random things i know about annodising are...

the coating is an oxide layer created by a high voltage and sulphuric acid,

the colours are just a dye,

to get that brushed finish the metal is put in an acid bath.

some other materials (like titanium) can be annodised.

There's probably a wiki page that will give more info.

Hard anodise is fucking HARD!! you know its hard when you are using a HSS drill bit and you get sparks!!!

Hard anodising uses a higher current and an acid temperature of zero degrees C The natural colour of hard anodise varies with the material quality. As a general rule, hard anodise is a dull gun metal grey colour, it is not so easy to dye.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...
