I have the engine out and stripping it down to rebuild so now at a point where the flywheel cover is off and I can clearly see the clutch etc.

There are 6 bolts holding the clutch pressure plate on, which I have removed and I am use to the clutch slipping off.

This didn't happen so removed the 33mm bolt that holds the flywheel on and still nothing.

Any ideas?

Thanks

you need a flywheel puller, the flywheels are quite stubborn

I have searched and that's what people say but isn't the metro a pre vento? It has 6 bolts holidng the clutch on.

I would assume that you remove the clutch plates and then you use a flywheel puller on the flywheel itself and not the clutch.

Forgive me if I am wrong as this is my first Mini stripdown!

Sounds like a vertoclutch to me,

the 6 nuts just separate the outer rear part, you still have to pull the front part off of its taper on the crank.

this may help,

Here is a photo of it. I think that I do need that puller as I can see three threadded holes for it to fit into.

Yet another tool to buy *frown*

that's verto.

you need a puller and you need to take the big bolt out of the middle (it's not 33mm, it's imperial *wink*)

Cool, wasn't too sure.

Will look at buying a puller on Monday.

Got the middle bolt out (33mm impact socket fits but I know it's a 1 5/16). When using the puller, do you leave the 6 clutch bolts all done up or taken out or loose?

Also, does the flywheel have to be horizontal when pulling it and do you need to lock it (or do you lock it only to remove the centre bolt)?

Thanks guys

best to have the 6 bolts in when you pull it, as with the bolts out when the front bit comes off the rear bit can fall down and twat the crank.

the flywheel can be pulled in any position, and yes you need to lock the flywheel, somthing wedged in the ring gear usually.

you'll need a decent length breaker bar to do the puller up, like 2 ft.

also make sure the puller goes on square, put it on, take up the slack, rotate it and ajust the 3 bolts if needed, also there are two different threads for the puller bolts, one for verto's one for pre verto's, IIRC the vero is the coarser set.

mind your feet, the fly whee'ls can jump off if they are tight!

Halfrauds sell the puller if you're in a hurry

Look back at one of my posts, I had serious issues getting my verto off, ended up using an air chisel on the clutch to get it off

Why do you need to lock the flywheel? Is it to help remove the bolt in the middle or does it need to be locked when pulling it off?

Thanks everyone. Unfortunatley we don't have a Halfrauds in Jersey so will probably buy that one off eBay as is dirt cheap.

you have to lock it to do the puller up, you have to do the puller tight.

If you have a old shell casing put in in the flywheel where the starter motor sits that should lock it up good. You need to lock it up otherwise as you tighten the puller the engine will just turn over...!!

And yes remove the bolt in the middle the part of the puller kit will fit in the space nicely you will see when you get the kit..

Looks OK apart from fitting the puller "plate" the wrong way around. Should work anyway though.
