Just wondering if anyone on here has ever run an old diesel on Vegatable oil? As diesel prices are ever increasing i am trying to find ways of saving money on the everyday car. Its only an old citroen xsara, so pretty basic set-up.

Any experience appreciated.

imo unless you can get free veg oil its not worth it ie like my mates dad, it made his van smell like a chippy
iirc he had to start it and run it till up to temp on regular diesel i think on his engine its a case of just pre heating the veg oil but i bet there is a million sites on the web if you search..

Yes i moved to the darkside *happy*

personally considering the cost and hastle of fitting an injection pump (even an old mechanical pump) i'd rather just pay the extra few pence/litre, plenty of success stories out there, but when i put pen to paper and worked out the coses it dodnt seem justifyable to me, have an old rover 220SDi as a daily kickabout.

A friend of mine used to use it. Like Brett said he started it on diesel then switch to the veg all once it was warm.

The veg oil was also pre heated to lower its viscosity...the method of heating it was very crued! *hehe!*

There are various websites on it. Some pumps will survive better than others. Some people buy changeover kits and heating kits for the veg oil.

Google SVO or straight vegetable oil.

fifth gear chucked veg oil straight into the tank of an old merc, might have been a c class, cant remember. It ran straight off the key, might have just been tv trickery, but looked good enough.

Turbo parts collector at the moment, almost ready.

I found a link, but theres no technical help in it, apart from mentioning they do use a quite a few filters.

Appears to work though.

The only viable way is, as stated, if you can get a regular supply of free used oil.

A work colleague of our eldest has cornered the market and installed a plant to clean the oil, using not just filters ,but saponifying the fats and removing them and produces fuel at about 25p per litre. He runs 80% chip oil and 20% regular diesel, has no starting problems and no issues with the pump, over a period of 30000 miles.

Its not a complicated process, nor does it take very long, as you leave it to work at each stage. The saponified fats are biodegradable and easily disposed of.

It can cost up to about £250 to buy the bits to set up your own plant, so its only worth it if you do a high mileage.

Ive been told to run it 70/30 split in winter and 80/20 in summer. I suppose if you dont mind using used oil and straining it then go for it.

I had a friend who did this for a couple of years with his 306 XTDT. I think he used upto 90% but tried to keep it lower most of the time as it could take a little while to start on it. It ran fine without being heated at all. The downsides are that it smells like a chip shop, It takes forever to fill the tank with a funnel and I felt incredibly shifty buying Somerfield's entire stock of veg oil.

He stopped doing it when the price of veg oil went up.

whilst this is illegal to use on the road and i would not condone using it, i do think as the price of regular deisel gets higher and higher and soon will be 140p, more and more people will be turning to other methods legal or not.

this does lack some of the qualities that are found at the pump, however at 60p ltr, *tongue*

did anyone see one of the recent 'traffic cops' programme where the guy was running his passat on all and everything - used engine oil, suspected cherryaid etc?

got plenty of it, as i live on a farm. Apparently you can filter out the dye by putting it through bread, wouldnt know if it works but could be worth a try.

There is a web site that sells kits vegoil.co.uk or something like that. It gets very detailed about the fuel pumps and their durability to veg oil. I think modern common rails don't like it, but older td's are generally fine. I had a mk2 golf gtd that ran for two years on nothing but chip fat! Just recycled through a coffee filter and chucked it in!

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

go to asda or say tesco use virgin "RAPE SEED Oil"

it mixes fine with diesel no more than 35% when its dam cold, around 4 deg C and below, you dont want it to wax

up to 70% rape sead oil in the summer months, only problem is it smells real bad in the summer on hot days, like mac donalls, and all the town locals put weight on breathing it in, thats why theres a town full of fat slobs ......lol *happy*

fook the chancelor he gets 81% of all our earnings now! from everone

Near Paris - France

one of my colleagues sells kit and was even on TV to talk about it.

He produces is own oil from sunflower or colza as his parents own a farm.

Says 10 tons make him 2000 liters or so.
Anyway he swears by Peugeot and Bosch.
Oil is preheated, all the front end of the car is masked up during winter to make it run hotter.

Rusty by nature

Certain brands of cat litter will filter out the dye. Know of a few people who used to do it all the time. Not sure which brand though, or maybe most types work.

Qualities ? Red diesel is a far better quality fuel than anything you'll find at a normal pump. And you can nearly be 100% certain it is what it is, and hasnt been tampered with.
If diesel plant and engines with hundreds of thousands of ££££ runs happily on it. You can be sure it is top quality fuel

But from what I understand, even if the colour dye is removed, there are still chemical traces that identify it as marked diesel. The colour is just a preliminary visual warning.
Even red is dear now.

I can recall buying it for 13p/l !!!! for...er a generator
