Here's my gearbox which I built about 4 years ago. It's just had its 6 monthly spray of WD40 and I remembered the cracks/ casting marks. At the time I was told the cracks/marks were nothing to worry about, but not so sure now. Any thoughts on whether it would be a problem or not to use it.

The casing has been cleaned up a bit around the cracks/marks before I aquired the box and it was used last in the mid 80's on a 1385 with no problems

nothing to worry about imo, i cleaned up the casting lines inside my box and gave various spots bit of a polish, it does look like someone has had a ham fisted go at yours though

looks like a hampster has been chewing at it. i think to find out you wanna grind it off a bit smoother so you can see whats actually going on. i think it all dpends whether it is a crack or a casting problem, if it is just the casting a good smoothing should cure it if it isnt too deep, if not its not hard to transfer into another case.

thats just where the cores are pieced together like a jigsaw puzzel and shows in the final casting. some are better than others, but those marks that you are concerned about are normal.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

Nothing to worry about, I work for a steel foundary as a NDT inspector, which are fancy ways of checking castings for cracks, I can tell you there's nothing to worry about, cracks are usually defined by very sharp, crisp clean marks, they are too big, curvy and faded if you understand.

I've just had the same discussion with Guessworks about my gearbox as I was concerned whether they could cause stress fractures, he suggested they were normal too

As above, only thats ever caused an issue is the one above the 3rd bolt hole (pinion support) i think. Which was removed later in the minis life.
