does sound like some kind of imobliser problem, maybe a faulty ign coil?

Not good news, but if this is the same injection as a mk 2 golf gti 8v then they are very very sensitive to "spiking" the ecu due to missing or bad earths, commonly after major work, meaning they do exactly as you describe. I would try and get hold of another ecu if they are the same as the golf. Edited by Tom Fenton on 25th Jan, 2011.

cheers guys for the reply, i cant find anything on an imobiliser so i guess i'll have a look into a possible ecu issue.
