Yes. Basically it stops air going through the IC when the engine is cold. as it heats up the flap shuts and the IC is in use.

I took the top off mine, riped it out, replaced it with a blanking plate and put the top back on.

The IC was ok, but I blew the core apart at 15psi. You'd be better with a Pace replacement IMO.

As Wil said ^^^^ I took the stat out of mine and blanked the two sections of the top cap apart.

There's a flap between the left and right outlet, you need to blank of the hole left behind when you take this out.

I see. Thanks guys. Is it just a matter of bending the metal crips back holding the black cover on to get to the stat thing?

Pretty much.

I think I just glued a 4mm strip off aluminuim accross the centre of mine and then sealed it around the edge with some RTV sealant.

When I had put mine back together I put a massive tiewrap round the whole thing (not blocking the airflow if you see what I mean). A massive jubluee clip would do the same thing.

But my core actually seperated from the end plate even though the caps remained in place.

I have an old CCC article on this mod somewhere.

They also flow better with all that gubbins removed. I have a R5 intercooler with blanking plate fitted and large jubilee strap (there known for blowing apart when upping the boost) and also a pace alloy R5 item spare if your interested.Inc p&p £25 and £40 for pace, pace in good order just needs polishing, modded one in reasonable order.

Right. I think i sorted it. Just hope it works

I have kept that plate that moves with the stat. I drilled a hole and put a bolt through it, holding the plate in the open position. I didnt have any gasket seal but as the drilled hole was quite tight, i used super glue. I also glued the thread and nut and then wrecked the thread to limit it coming off

Then i butchered all the original bits that were in it. The stat, springs etc slide the plate under the locking bolt and glued the hinge area of the plate and glued in the screws

To get the plastic housing off the body of the i/c i used a screw driver to flick the 'claws' up round the edges and on one length. So when i put it back on all i had to do was angle it in under the claws i didnt lift, the lay the i/c flat on the work top and while pushing from the plastic end towards the wall, went around the bottom edge of the claws with a small tack hammer then used some pliers to grip them back into the plastic housing. With all the other bits of crap removes, i guess it should flow better aslong as i have a good seal.

Bit of a bodge but got there in the end. Thanks guys!!

May well be interested in the pace one!! I only wanted this one to check the size on and see if it would fit on the blow through system.

Once you have removed the end tank, it will never seal the same way again. Even untouched cores are easily blown apart. You can try and brace the entire unit, or just make alloy end tanks and weld them onto the R5 core.

I did that with mine way back 17 years ago after the tanks kept blowing off despite strong brace supports strapping the IC together.

Fully welded with alloy tanks is best
