Well a new one would cost you in excess of ?800 to buy the gearkit, a decent diff, and all the bearings/gaskets/shafts to complete the job. That would be building it up yourself.

You don't give enough info, what diff, s/c drops?

A brand new Clubman gearkit from Minispares is just over ?300. A 2nd hand box is NEVER worth more than this....Also, which make is it?? If it's NOT MSC or JKD, can you get new gears for it if needed??
2nd hand boxes are not impossible to value unlleess its dissembeled on your kitchen table

lol, i'd hope it included the sump else its just a handful of gears and oil.

if it helps they usually go for about ?250ish on ebay, without drops and with a normal diff. well the ones ive watched have anyway.

"Whats drops ???"

Drop gears, or transfer gears. 3 gears, one on the crank called the primary gear, one below called the idler gear, and one on the end of the 1'st motion shaft in the gearbox called the 1'st motion gear.

A fool and his money are soon parted. There is some real shit punted around on ebay. I've seen a set of pitted, chipped drop gears go for over ?150. Ebay is madness. I would view a straight cut gearbox very carefully as it is likely to have been used by not an old lady.

Bugger off, I'm getting there.

if it helps in any way i've just ordered my new gearbox, here's the quote i had off the chap.

"As well as the gearbox I'd do the transfer case too - replace the idler bearing and fit a new outer race for the pilot nose bearing.

To build up the box with *new* bearings (layshaft, mainshaft, idler (uprated as used on the later cars), differential, nose, etc), a 'clubman' SCCR gear set, evolution x-pin diff, Central oil pickup pipe, layshaft, oilseals, locktabs, gaskets, Rod change anti leak kit, genuine baulk rings & sync hub springs.

Case would be chemically cleaned, threads tapped out and can be painted (if you want)

All assembled with a shimmed up idler gear and supplied with a new uprated clutch oil seal (as used on the later cars) and oil drain sealing washer (see *everything* included!)

Cost would be ?700"

Personally i think its money well spent and is damn good value for a fully built box, i already have my own s/c drops to put on it though. but i'd rather pay someone to do it for me as i don't have the skills/patience to do it myself.

That quote was from iclemini from the minifinity forum. I think as he gave me a quote yesterday as well and said he was building one for him.. As for secondhand sccr gearboxs i wouldn't bother i've an old one sat in the shed now thats all pitted and badly worn. Its not worth the hassle.

To answer the question, I would put it on ebay and hope to get about ?250 for it.

If the box was in bits, I reckon I would look at it very carefully (seen a jeweller in action?)

Bugger off, I'm getting there.

Minis have got bonnets you know... It's possible to take the engine out of there.. No need for cutting.

yes but i've just given back the engine crane i've been borrowing for the last year. its sods law that i'd need it as soon as the chap asked for it back.

got a clubby front to fit anyway so it's gotta come off all the same.
