As you lot seem to know about everything, even though this isn't a land rover foum I thought I'd get some useful replies.

I have been offered a 1995, 133 000 mile defender 90 pickup with a 300tdi engine and really fancy buying it, but looking round the prices seem to vary by about 5k for very similar vehicles. Now it drives fine as i've had a quick go before, but now need to test drive with a view to buying, so will be a little more vigerous. Is there anything in particular to look out for when test driving that might not immeidately raise concern?

Also body, chassis, running gear checks. Before I get told to bugger off and search I will be searching the landrover forums for pointers too.

What would you expect to pay for a decent example of this vehicle as I've seen them from £2500 to £6000 for vehicles that seem to be in identical condition and milage.

Thanks

James

Rot rot and more rot, even a 1995 could have rotten crossmember/bulkhead/outriggers.

My dad was a Land Rover apprentice so is Land Rover through and through, but they are something you have to want, as there are other 4x4 out there for much less money that are 90% as capable offroad, and much more comfortable on the road.

Check diesel pipes, on the o3 td5 at work, its been leakin on top of the tank, the pipes have been replaced twice. still pissing diesel.

Check the bulkhead, chassis, outriggers, clutch if the motor has been used for working (constantly towing heavy loads)
Wiper rack seems to be another current problem on the works motor too.
Just general checks really, nothing too specialist to look for. As with every car, check EVERYWHERE.

Thanks for the input. Unfortunately as for 4x4's Its a defender or nothing for me, I've wanted one for years. That will not be allowed cloud my judgement, as so far I have done well and finding good vehicles. It is being bought from someone I know which hopefully means honest answers to questions.

Looks like I'll be armed with a torch and hammer tomorrow, prodding, poking and generally having a good tug underneath.

I was going to edit them but it would have only made it worse.
