not sure if its legal on an N reg ?

it will run a cat so you would never get it though MOT emissions as you would have to run it with not cat and a carb

Seems that If you get approval from a mini 'specialist' that states the engine has been replaced with an engine from an older vehicle, emmisions will be based on that of the older vehicle.
So all you need to make sure you do is to keep the engine plate off the older motor - OR - find one from somewhere and re-rivet it into place!

Incidentally, if you find a scrap engine, if you destroy the engine plate, the rivets are easy to remove with mole-grips (the rivet has a 45degree 'screw' thread in it, so you need to twist&pull).
An Engine number plate you want to keep is best removed by drilling out the rivet heads.
Viola, the engine number you want, and a set of rivets to fit it with.

Yes this is correct there is a section of the MOT testers manual that details this as well. If you have problems either (a) find a friendly MOT station or (b) probably piss the tester off but refer him to the copy of his MOT testers manual he is obliged to have on the premises............

easy way to kidd the MOT tester on for the emission purpose is....................

take the the vacume pipe off the distributor
and adjust the tick over to suit

then take it for the test

when he bangs it on the co machine
it will read Lean as it will be pulling air in from the pipe which is disconected

i have got dozens of old bangers through this way even some which smokes more than a

world war two destroyer on full steam!

then reconnect

Shazam!------------------

but remember to set your motor up correctley later

oh! and dont run ANY BOOST!*wink*

Just spoken to morespeed about this as i've just cracked the manifold on my spi and have all the stuff to convert to turbo. they say i'd need the chambers taken out to 28-30cc to be able to run 8-10psi of boost. i'm only doing this converion till i've rebuilt another engine to a higher spec! What sort of power could i expect from this also running a intercooler?

A lot more than you get with an SPi for sure! You will struggle to put more than 8psi through a stock clutch however...
