My 1380 engine started knocking, so took it apart and it's had:

Crank
Shell bearings
Cam
drop gears
Gearbox
Rockers
pushrods
water pump

It's got fantastic oil preasure.

It sounds like a diesel engine, well a little worse than that.
What could it be? Im thinking the cam banging about, or maybe little ends?

I've not had these things go wrong before so not sure what they sound like?

Pretty hard to diagnose over the net mate, can you get a video of it up? Might be easier to point you in the right direction.

I thought that, it does sound top end, I checked the cover and its fine, even tried a different cover. Started it briefly without the cover, still doing it. It's had a complete bottom end rebuild. But I don't know what other things sound like.

It's nothing stupid like the water pump or fan is it? Sounds louder when you went to that end of the engine. Or the timing chain/tensioner??

naaa its more of a metalic knock rather than a fan hitting, or chain rattling or exhaust blowing. Anyone had a cam bang around in the bearings or little end knock, I've checked all the little things I can think of, just not ripped it apart to check, but I don't want to if theres something else it might be, any more ideas before I burn the thing?

little end knock sounds prety much just like big end knock .have had 2 engines where the little ends failed (not a-series though! but the noise is all to familiar)

have you changed anything in the cam gear area? I'm thinking duplex chain hitting the timing cover,

nope, its similar, but alot quieter to what it sounded like last time, I assumed big end faliure, and it needed a new crank idealy, so it's had a bottom end rebuild and a tamer cam put it. Piston slap is the pistons moving in a worn bore isnt it? I suppose it could be that, if so I suppose its scrap, bores seemed fine though.

Have you done a compression test, out of curiousity?

Water pump bearing knackered? give it a wobble!

from the video, it aint piston slap either. but like i say this is just from the video, would need to hear it in person, to me sounds more like a valvetrain issue,

Im thinking vavle train issue, could it be the cam knocking around? I have to admit I was a bit of a twat putting it together and didn't get new cam bearings, and they wern't the best, well crap realy, but I was an idiot and just slotted the cam in. Could it be that? I'll have to have another look tomorrow, but it does sound louder at the back, it's also a little louder when removing the oil filler cap. Not water pump either, its a brand new minispares one. This sound is very similar to that of what it was before the work done.

Rockers hitting the back of the cover?

Idler gear rattling around?

The latter because most new gasket sets seem to be thicker then the originals.
