I have been pulled before because of the noise of my carb, exhaust, sc drops, sc cwp and sc gears.
The copper said your car sounds awful, I said thanks it cost me thousands to make it sound like that - they let me on my way

Paul

I seriously doubt it!

I think actually on the whole its not a daft question, we are continually having to adjust our lives with regards to pollution so why not noise pollution while the cars in use.

Yes, I think the question is very valid. Part of vehicle approval is noise emission. If a vehicle stays within a certain legal limit it may enter production & public roads.

So in theory - a higher level of noise emission would indeed be illegal. In most cases this is due to excessive noise from exhaust systems - I think the same applies to any other component of a car, like the transmission.

Wheter it can or can not be tested by a copper on the side of the road... Which makes it a bit of a theoretical problem.

Interesting. I've never thought about it before...

Honda have got it right on their adverts "its not how loud a car is but the quality of the sound it makes"

Surely it would be hard to prosecute/fine on the noise of a gearbox if they can then a good few wagons will be completley fooked! As will tractors, plant equipment etc...all totally road legal and noisier than SC drops. Also ive heard some 4x4 running tyres which make a right bloody racket!

They surely don't fall into the same category/law as cars, do they?

And those off-road tyres are getting banned more and more.

It would be next to impossible to measure the sound of the gears.

They would need to measure the sound as the car was in gear and moving. How exactly would they measure that without taking into consideration road noise, general surrounding noise and various other noises a car makes whilst driving?

With an exhaust you can just rev it but trying to measure a gearbox and putting restrictions on that is frankly stupid. How could they realistically set a limit when you can't measure just that one specific sound?

With a drive-by noise test...? Dunno about the UK, but here they have some facillities to perform drive-by noise tests. Of course that's not possible on the side of the road right at the place they cought you...

But how could they realistically factor out the other noises that will obviously accompany a moving vehicle?

But they're testing the cars noise levels as a whole not the drops. So if there's a noise level and the car exceeds it, its going to be the combination of, tyre noise, engine, transmision, induction, exhaust, fans etc

Has anyone using straight cut drops had any problems at driveby noise levels at track days?

But currently they only test exhaust noise. How could you put a limit on vehicle noise? They would have to have different limits for different vehicles and then take into consideration engine sizes, etc.

It's a stupid concept.

They have drive by noise regulations in other countries, at race tracks, new cars have to pass drive by noise regulations.

I don't want it to happen, but I can't see it being totaly unfeesable in the future. With all this IVA crap I keep hearing about, a drive by noise test doesn't seem too rediculous to me.

Agreed, all these threads to is serve to do is piss people off with the relentless erosion of freedom in the name of pointless legislation.
