Hey all, my mate lee in our mini club sent me an article from a vintage bike magazine about a report on the levels of ethanol in petrol.
Its currently 5% but going up to 10% in the next couple of years, it seems as though we may have some issues to address? Especially if you are running a GRP tank or its sealed in some way as it may react.

Ive put a link to a post on a bike forum but can anyone get hold of the Qinetiq report?

bit of skaremongering?

"There is a strong likelihood for increased deposit formation on inlet valves, in combustion chambers and in piston ring grooves, this will increase the risk of spark knock and engine failure due to piston seizure"

serious? .. on the flip side my tank is sealed wiht GRP as i had to install a pump. willl need to keep an eye on it!

yeah ive read another snipit from the report stating that is 0.5% of water gets into the mix then it can cause major corrosive action inside carbs. It may be scaremongering but where theres smoke theres fire! or maybe not in this case :(

are grp tanks not sealed on the inside with gelcoat of similar because at our work (fairline boats) we have to coat any bit of grp that will be near moisture as it is pourus and absorbs moisture over time weakening it.

Upside is that you can run more boost due to lower burn temp. Check out some of the E85 forums in regards to turbo engine performance.

MY US-based chums have been forced to use the stuff for years, and it is utter crap.
Doesn't seem to burn as well, and if a car is stood for more than a month it will usually need new fuel...

Metric is for people who can't do fractions.
