When you machine up an O ring groove what are the dimensions for 1.5 and 2mm.
Also is the groove put in one or both mating surfaces

Groove only goes in one surface, as for size, depends on the section of ring you plan to use.

section would be either 1.5mm or 2mm, ID would be 57mm, for a 1.5mm section i would presume that the groove would be cut say 1.5mm wide but something like 1mm deep so it seals.
Is that sort of right?

Yes more or less, obviously you need to make sure the ring sits proud of the grooved face to give it some compression.
