Even if it is not illegal you don't want to be doing it if you don't have to. Best to have a bulkhead between it and you. http://www.twin-turbo.co.uk

For a vehicle to pass an IVA then it must have a sealed bulkhead between the fuel tank and the passenger compartment. Therefore, technically, yes you must have a bulkhead. On 15th Jul, 2009 fastcarl said:

This is true, but it won't fail an MOT. IVA is all about getting a car road worthy for the first time. It is not a law as such.

The fella i work with, has a fuel cell in a series 3 land rover lightweight, with another sealed 'tank' so to speak around it, to comply with his race regulations. Could be a possibilty if you absolutely must bring the fuel tank inside. On 26th Jan, 2012 Tom Fenton said:

I stand by what I said, I doubt that it is illegal, but not the best idea. I know its not strictly a law, but if VOSA pull you over, and you're minus a bulkhead, they'll deem that excessive modification to the monocoque and send you for an IVA in which case it will then fail, and on more than the missing bulkhead. MK2 Escort has the tank in the boot, and doesnt have a full steel bulkhead. At least, I'm sure I remember one a friend owned like that !! Just the rear seat in the way lol. I spoke to a guy building a Cobra it car that he has to IVA Holy good fuck. Im amazed anything can pass an IVA the lengths he was going to !! 9.85 @ 145mph

Well A mini (shock horror) has the fuel tank in the boot and the rear bulkhead has gaps around the side you can get your hands through.

He's got a metro so am guessing he wants it in the boot? If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of. |

It will only fail on what has been changed, if the changes are not up to standard. Any factory fitted equipment, suitable or not cannot be failed. However, this has moved away from the point.

Except it's BIVA these days and not IVA, it's a whole different depressing punch in the guts. On 11th Feb, 2015 robert said:

Are you sure Andy. BIVA and IVA are the same thing aren't they? The IVA replaced the SVA. Edit: in fact I can find no reference to BIVA on the direct gov website, only IVA.

Ben I think you have mis-read the statement about bulkheads, but equally the comment about removing a buckhead is erroneous to the question asked. Don't think so, but that was not my point. I was mearly making the observation that if you do have to IVA a production car because of the mods you have done then it can't fail on production items, even though strictly speaking they would fail if you fitted them to a kit car and tried to IVA them. If that makes sense. Basically if you are unlucky enough to get pulled up for fitting a turbo box then the IVA guy can only test what is modified. The classic aerials, wing mirrors, etc, etc (on minis) can be put down as fail points if they were produced with that car. Mind you if you have changed the mirrors for non IVA then they will fail. All irrelevant to this thread, but so much is these days. Such fun. http://www.twin-turbo.co.uk
