As said above, you can only re-shell using a heritage shell. Throwing old plates on a newer shell is ringing. On 2nd Nov, 2010 wil_h said:

People have been reshelling mini's for years, most pre 90-s shells had no id plates on the shell other than the vin. Chances are a lot of legit mini's (or believed legit) have been reshelled in this way. one day boost will be mine!

See if the VIN on the V5 matches the shell. I doubt it does somehow, 1990 Minis can't be tax exempt. |

If it was a Heritage shell, the seller should have the certificate from BMH which makes it 100% legal.

As turbominij says, if the reshelling isn't done right it just looks like a fake.

The reason I ask is I have been lead to believe the dvla will be cracking down on this quite heavily and don't facing buying something that will end up in the crusher FWIW, as i understand it, it wont be crushed, just made to pass the test (IVA-new version of SVA) as it is basically a vehicle of indeterminate age, unless you can prove it was done before the rules came in which if its a mid 90's shell, you wont be able to as it cant have been!! It will also end up on a Q plate, and be subject to the same level of road tax everything else is...... But to be fair, if they really start cracking down on it, then about 90% of the cars on here are buggered!!! Modify the monocoque and its IVA time, meaning that unless youve left the bulkhead alone and turbo'd using a mirage kit or similar, then you (we) could be in a whole world of shit..... Well worth having a good read over on ACE if you get some time, they are working really hard to tyr and actually converse with the powers that be, and not just let people like us (who are no doubt modifying, but doing so safely and for 'legitimate' reasons) be steamrollered!! And on the 7th day........... God created turbochargers! |

Im sure I read years ago that reshelling into another shell (non heritage) is based on what parts are fitted from the car with the reg plate you are using, there was a points table relivent to different parts ie: engine, front subframe, rear subframe and so on, the term ringing is a bit servere for reshelling, as ringing is more a case of stealing a car and then swopping the plates and vin over for a log book you own. one day boost will be mine!

Yes, as I mentioned earlier, the rules were different pre about '95 and it was on a points based system. But proving it was done back in those rules is the hard part. Why don't you ask if the seller has the V5C for the shell. Then you can just make it the 1990 cat that it is. Fastest 998 mini in the world? 13.05 1/4 mile 106mph

Is this from a seller up our way perchance? A mini shop?

Hi all I have just seen an advert for a mk1 mini which has been reshelled using a 1990 new shell (probably a different mini I am assuming) according to the owner. Is that legal and if so how do I check it has been done legally or is it one of those best to avoid? 1/4 Mile 14.3secs 96Mph Terminal 10psi of boost.

If the owner has indead used a brand new shell and simply swapped all the origional parts over then it is perfectly lehgal surely, as with the old points system, anything new was considered origional.

If all mini owners where completely honest then probably half the countries mini's would be crushed. There's loads of ringers about. |

My new shell never came with a heritage certificate, it was made by rover not bmh sold though minisport.
On 10th Feb, 2011 Rod S said:
If it was a Heritage shell, the seller should have the certificate from BMH which makes it 100% legal. If not, although the current rules say it has to be a brand new shell, the rules were different 16 or more years ago so it would depend on when it was done (but it would have to be a very long time ago to justify it).
