recieved a engine today on a creat that i bought without seeing, but not bad for only 80 quid,

after looking into it i am trying to find out whats what,

camshaft either says BP270, 3R270 it does definatly say 270 but cannot tell what the begin is as its got marks over it, (never heard of a 3R270) but is there any other way to tell what it is?

on the tops of the pistons it says, id19 s13 +.508 done a quick search read there powermax 1340/1380 but will keep looking and hopefully get some measuring done (bore or piston/skirt?)

the head is ported to match exhaust gasket (almost) and also the valves slightly bigger and have no dip in them like my mg metro head, but it looks to me that the head has been skimmed on the rocker cover side as there are no raised surfaces around the thermostate or did the early engines have it like this?

also is there anything i should check whilst its apart,

i will hopefully get my engine build manual in the post tomorow,

I'd say bp270 for the cam and yep sound like powermax pistons. only way to be sure what size it to measure the bore.

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

oh ok kl wez it doesnt look like nothing special but it will be on its way to benross/phil onces its cleaned a bit

i just wet the end of the camshaft and put it on a piece of paper and i can just about make out bp270 (my eyes are terrible)

i mesure the bores at just under 74mm

i hope it doesnt turn out a bad engine thanks for your to be honest i am not even sure what to do with it but ah well, turbo or 7 port lol

what other things shall i check?

sounds like a warm 1380 then to me. prob not turbo friendly if thats what you are looking for. However if its in decent fettle its worth more than £80

If something is worth doing, it's worth doing half of.

Yes, but you've sold the block to a good home !

a warm? do you mean worn? i am unsure if i will be making it turbo friendly but i have had a read that a few people are using these pistons and just maching them to make them 17cc,

this will be my first full build which will all be done by the book

Benross: the threads seem all fine i put everything back together to check i had everything today and its all there, and all went together nicely will give all the bits a good once over and replace whats needed

My 'warm' he means mildly modified, not quite a 'hot 1380'.

Probably best to measure the dishes in the pistons and the chambers in the head. It might be possible to expand the chambers in the head to get your desired CR. That way you don't have to take the pistons out and risk damaging them removing them from the rod's for machining.

Thought you where going vauxhall/honda engined??

the cam looks rather good condition bit of wear in the usual places but i doubt its done loads of miles,

one piston is out of the block was like that when i got it, as it needs new rings the bores seem ok nice and smooth (bit of surface rust which seems to just wipe off with some WD40 and a rag) bores have no lips at the top

willl measure the the lot and work out the CR if i go NA with it then it will be a high CR if i got turbo it will be a very low CR as i am going to want alot of BHP

just went through the box of bits that come with the engine and i found 1 straight cut drop gear now i need a couple more!

16V talk below
i got the 16v frame waiting to go into my city E but its going to take some time as i am not in a rush to get the red top in there, and i havent got shafts yet, plus the red top needs a rebuild etc sorting out for coilovers, the list goes on and i like to grab bargins off ebay trying to do it all on a budget

but this 1380 will go in to the mini before the red top ever does, and then the 1380 will go into my pheonix mini or visversa after a couple of years
