this doesnt look right to me, im trying to fit a lightened, pre verto flywheel and it doesnt seem to go on far enough for the lock washer to have any effect, is this right?? any advice appreciated. if it isnt correct, i need to get the car back on the road quickly so im thinking of putting on a new standard 1275 verto clutch i have, that should be able to cope with standard boost and while im running in the engine shouldnt it?

yeah a std clutch is ok for std and a little more with careful use.

not sure thats right either, but I haven't built a non-vert... so I wouldn't like to say for sure.. but I think it should sit furtheur on the crank... will it pull on when tightened?

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

Std turbo clutch is just ok for standard boost but standard verto clutch i dont think would stand much.

I fitted a brand new turbo clutch and it didnt like much over 7psi. It would slip the clutch as it came on boost. was ok if you went easy utpo 4k then booted it.

i have tried to tighten it up alex but it doesnt seem to slide onto the crank any further. i think i will have to put a std 1275 clutch on just for the time being, i will hardly be going on boost while running in the engine anyway, just dont want to risk to continue with the pre verto clutch if that isnt correct

Stupid question, but have you fitted the correct key washer?

Verto / non verto are different.

That ain't right.
Assuming you've not dun somet silly like let the C-clip for the primary gear partially fall out, send it back as it ain't right!!! All flywheel tapers whether on a 1959 848, or a 1999 MPi were the same... Your flywheel is obviously the exception!!!

thanks dave, the c washer is fully on and in the correct place. i tried to fit the flywheel to another crank and it stops near on in the same position. i can see that the c washer fits in the recess in the back of the flywheel but just doesnt seem to slide on any further. which as dave suggests the taper is wrong.

Dave, should the flywheel sit flush against the crank? it seems that it should so that the keyway sits in both the crank and flywheel.

The flywheel MUST be proud of the crank by around 0.25mm (I'd aim for more like 1-1.5mm however!) as a minimum when the flywheel is fully home. I had to machine down the end of my first crank when i fitted my UL fluywheel all that time ago, because the crank and flywheel were at the same level.

i will try and get another flywheel sent down, if that doesnt fit then i will have to see about having the crank looked at, oh the joys. just fed up without having the car for so long, i long for the day that the turbo engine runs *happy*

Where did you buy the flywheel from??

Dave, I never thought to check how far my flywheel sticks out pask the end of my crank. I'll check this when I strip my engine

I know what you mean... when I was building mine I spent hundreds of hours on it, well it felt like that, without getting anywhere...

Keep at it, it's definatly worth it in the end!!

post up a picture of what your Verto flywheel looked like on the crank (washer removed obviously!!!) That way we'll know if indeed your crank (unlikely) is iffy.
Also - Do you have a decent micrometer or vernier/digital caliper?
Measure up the crank taper diameters at both ends, and the middle, and i'll tell you if it is out or not...

I really do suspect the new Flywheel however - but you might just want to put your mind at rest...

i have two verto clutchs and i cant remember which one was the turbo, obviously there isnt any diameter difference between a 1275 and turbo item, but i can try both to see if there is the same difference between them and the non verto. odd thing is that i saw and drove the metro which the engine came from, and the verto clutch looked ok when it came off. there is however, some slight pitting/corrosion on the crank, only slight, hardly anything, but you can see scoring on the inside of the pre verto flywheel when you try to put it on and take it off. i will try and get some more pics up for you dave, thanks

i cant get hold of an accurate micrometer or vernier dave. might try and blag one from work
