Are no more for me *happy*

I managed to get just under 1kg of grease out of a pair of radius arms and both plastic grease tubes were split. Common problem I am led to believe. Not any more! I have fitted some metal grease tubes that came with a Quinten Hazel New Old Stock kit which must date from the late 70's or early 80's. The tubes were a nice hammer fit so there is zero chance of any grease making its way into the radius arm ever again, and the needle roller will at last finaly get lubricated properly!! Hurrah :) I don't have to replace the bronze bushes as they are perfectly fine, Just the needle rollers. bonus!!:)

Interesting thing is that one of the radius arms came off the Wifes Mini when it was only 5 years old and around 18,000 miles, yet the grease tube was still split, so I recon pretty much every radius arm on late Minis with these plastic tubes are a little heavier than they should be *hehe!*

Sprocket, we did a radius arm repair session last year. So we had quite few sets of repair kits. Some tubes were allready split from new!! We threw them away and fitted the metal tubes someone over here remanufactures (not hard to do realy).

as you said: great stuff! I'm certainly never going to fit plastic tubes again... Waste of time and effort! :)

I remember a while ago heating a radius arm up to let the grease run out. I was surprised at the time how much it can hold!

thats one poor design...so to much pressure and the tube breaks and you fill your radius arms..!

Exactely. The older Minis were fitted with nuclear bomb proof metal tubes. Later ones got - probably to save some pennys - plastic tubes. Tho original tubes are a lot better quality than those you get in today's repair kits... The NOS ones from the picture is postet are very solid and flexible - the newer ones are fragileand brittle... And some are even split before the have been fitted...

So basicaly - try to get you hands on the metal tubes... Only one downside: they are about 100 grammes heavyer (noin this rare case it's not good to drill additional holes *happy*)

We found it best to use and old shaft as a guide when fitting/knocking in the metal tubes.

To quote from Sumerford Minis catalog

"Towards the end of the 1980s the rubber cone suspension radius arms were modified to incorporate a stub axle seal. Also, the steel lubricating tube for the radius arm pivot shaft was replaced with a nylon item."

So if it has an O ring at the base of the stub axle beind the rear most hub bearing, it has plastic tubes from the factory. If on the other hand you have an earlier radius arm without the o ring, and its never had the pivot shaft and bearings replaced, its a good bet that they might be the metal tubes. If some one has messed with it, then its any mans guess as to wht might be fitted, but I would put my money on them being plastic, as that is all you can get these days, which is why I paid a little extra on Ebay for the NOS Quinten Hazel kit with the metl tubes *happy*

My refurbed ones from minisport where split from when they where on, at the time I didn't think anything of it when they took more than the usuall amount of grease, and by the time I found out about this problem it was too late to send them back.

Aoven would be better as you can get the whole thing up to temperature, 200 degrees would probibly do it, but I wouldnt advise doing this in the kitchen oven! Just heat the radius arm with a gas burner evenly to soften up the grease incontact with it, then give it some sharp dunts on a block of wood, and fish out the large part of the grease by passing the spindle through its hole a few times. Repeat until you are satisfied.
Make sure you have plenty of gloves and rags before you start, and do it in the garage, as its messy as fuck

How much would it compromise the strength of the arm if you drilled a hole near the stub axle to blow the grease out with an airline?

You could probably work something out with a bit of plaggy pipe and an airline/pressure washer.

Looks like a good use for a can of expanding PU foam.
