hey

my mate drove his mini 25 miles to go on the rollers on sat and a few miles away he lost oil pressure suddenly. he said it then came up too 5psi a couple times breaifly.

just want to know what its most likely to be, its a standard metro turbo lump.

cheers eden

Oil pump or bearing failure potentially, either way, having run the engine with no oil pressure for any length of time there's a good chance that some bearing damage will have been caused now.

the prv is ok and he only ran it the last couple miles with it low. would a failed bearing cause it to come back breaifly?

did the pressure light come on?

I'd check the gauge first to rule this out; As Carl suggested then the PRV.

After that, if low oil pressure is diagnosed, I'd be pulling it apart for an inspection.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

if you have checked the RV properly!

with the oil pressure dropped it may have stuck open then the debris may have been dislodged, shutting the valve, there may be worn bearings now ?
i would try another gauge as suggested to make sure

if not look see if the RV in the oil filter head is stuck open but i doubt it

next is worn mains bearings

I've had the little ballbearing valve in the oil filter housing stick open and cause a loss of pressure. worth a check.

maybe a good reason to check with another gauge lol

Has he physically removed the PRV and checked spring and plunger are working and nothing seized ?

Could be as simple as a damaged oil pump gasket. If everything has been checked and a decent gauge varyfies no oil pressure, its time to start taking the engine apart to look for the cause

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I'll say it again incase no-one heard. It has the same effect as the PRV on oil pressure.

Is that no just a bypass vale though will? where does the oil go for it to loose pressure?

Yep.

It does seem odd, but my car would not make any oil pressure when it stuck open.
