Hi guys Changing my box over and need to undo the pinion nut to put on my new box.

The new box selector spins out the way easy and can lock it up without a problem. Is it just something simple i'm missing its just the standard box is fine and would rather not just jam something into the gears. *oh well*

Have you taken the spring, ball and sleeve out of the side of the diff cover? They locate the selector shaft.

The reverse gear is lined up lovely just dont wanna turn.

The diff if off at the moment so would the spring ball not be there now...?

If all 3 selector forks are lined up it should just rotate out the way, try a little exra force (not too much) by putting a screwdriver through the rollpin hole and turning it

I seriously doubt it!

Looking at the rear of the box (diff end), when you take the right hand output shaft/pot joint cover of and look for a hole in line with the selector rod. In that hole is a spring, a sleeve and a ball bearing. The ball locates in a groove on the selector shaft. You need them out so that the shaft can move in and out.

I'm asumming rod change box??

Yer its a rod change box.

The new box turned up already locked up so was easy to see what had to be done.
Will have a look for this spring ball thingie. But will it still be there if the diff was already taken off..

sometimes they pop out and sometimes they need a little persuasion.

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

you'll need a spring and ball or you won't be able to get gears. The selector rod will just do as it feels...

And when you find the spring and ball that go inside the sleeve there is a fourth very important part to putting it back together.....

A small O ring.

The ball/spring and sleeve are held in place by an "ear" on the side casing but the gasket on the side casing is the same as the early ones (pre-rod change which didn't have the ear) so they added a small O ring around the sleeve which the "ear" seals against.

Miss it out or leave an old hard one in the groove and it will piss out oil.....

Schrödinger's cat - so which one am I ???
